2015 Subaru Liberty, Outback recalled over pre-collision braking defect

Subaru Australia has recalled more than 5000 new Liberty and Outback models over a potential defect with the cars’ pre-collision braking system.

The recall affects 5073 model year 2015 Subaru Liberty and Outback vehicles equipped with the brand’s pre-collision braking and adaptive cruise control technologies, which form part of its EyeSight suite of safety systems.

The recall notice explains that in the event of a brake lamp switch failure in an affected vehicle, the pre-collision braking system may not operate as intended in an emergency braking situation (where the driver has failed to apply the brake), or may fail to properly engage when the vehicle is in adaptive cruise control mode.

In the worst case scenario, the defect could lead to a crash.

Subaru says the cause of the defect is a software programming issue, and stresses that the problem does not affect the performance of the brakes when engaged by the driver. There are no known defects with the brake light switch itself.

If the vehicle suffers a brake light switch failure, the electronic stability control warning light will illuminate in the instrument cluster notifying the driver that there has been a malfunction.

Subaru explains that the issues was found during internal checking by its parent company Fuji Heavy Industries and insists the recall is a precautionary measure to ensure safety.

There have been no reports of accidents in Australia or overseas.

Affected owners will be contacted by mail shortly and asked to bring their vehicle to their authorised Subaru dealer for rectification.

The rectification procedure consists of downloading a modified program into the vehicles. It will take less than 30 minutes to complete.

Owners looking for more information can contact the Subaru customer service centre on 1800 226 643.
