2016 Mitsubishi Challenger revealed in patent images

A number of patent images of what appears to be the new-generation 2016 Mitsubishi Challenger have surfaced online.

The all-new Challenger - which is based upon the underpinnings of the popular Triton ute - is a different looking beast to its workhorse sibling, and includes the Japanese brand's new "dynamic shield" design language. That look will also be applied to Lancer, ASX and Mirage in the coming 12-18 months.

Indeed, the front-end is a near replication of the treatment seen on the updated Outlander SUV, with a bold X-shaped look and sharper headlights than were seen on the previous generation. Our previous spy images of the 2016 Mitsubishi Challenger indicated big changes, and the front is just the start.

The rear looks as though it will be very different to the existing Challenger. Most notable are the elongated vertical tail-lights and a larger rear opening, while the side profile includes integrated side steps and a sharply-rising third row window.

Overall, it appears reminiscent of the car it replaces - as is arguably the case with the new Triton - and sources Mitsubishi Australia have suggested to CarAdvice that the new model will be far more focused on passenger comfort and a more premium experience for occupants.

If the cabin in the new Triton is anything to go by, the new Challenger will be a huge improvement over its forebear.

The SUV is expected to be offered with seven seats, and powering the vehicle will be the same 2.4-litre turbo diesel engine as is seen in the Triton, which produces 133kW of power and 430Nm of torque.

Expect the new Challenger to be revealed in the coming months, and it could be on sale here by the end of this year or early in 2016.
