2015 BMW 1 Series pricing and specifications

Fresh styling, added equipment and sharper prices headline the upgrades to the 2015 BMW 1 Series that arrives in Australian showrooms next week.

BMW Australia today confirmed price cuts of up to $2700 for its updated 1 Series hatchback, as well as a $2030 reduction for the flagship M135i hot hatch, which now tops the range at $62,900 plus on-road costs.

The restructured line-up now starts with the 118i petrol model, with its $36,900 price tag unchanged from the old 116i it replaces.

The sole diesel in the range, the 118d, benefits from the biggest price cut, available in updated form from $40,300.

The new 120i replaces the old 118i and slots in $1100 beneath its predecessor at $41,900, while the 125i is now available with the M Sport package for under $50K, asking $2100 less at $48,900.

Standard features of the 118 variants now include a reverse-view camera and a real-time traffic information system, as well as an eight-speed automatic transmission, 16-inch alloy wheels, the Sport Line styling package, sports steering wheel, the Navigation Business system, rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and the ConnectedDrive Lifestyle package.

The second-tier 120i gains larger 17-inch alloy wheels, front foglights, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, storage package, enhanced climate control, interior lights package, enhanced smartphone connectivity and instrument cluster, Driving Assistant camera-based safety functions, and upgraded upholstery.

The 125i additionally gets 18-inch alloys, an eight-speed sports automatic transmission, the M Sport styling package with M Sport brakes, variable sports steering, auto-dimming side mirrors, LED headlights, front parking sensors, and alcantara/cloth upholstery.

The M135i now comes standard with 18-inch M alloy wheels, adaptive M suspension, adaptive LED headlights, Navigation Professional, DAB+ digital radio, enhanced sound system, and leather upholstery.

A turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine powers the 118i and 120i variants, producing 100kW/220Nm and 130kW/250Nm respectively – the latter up 5kW.

The 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel in the 118d also rises 5kW to 110kW and 320Nm.

The 2.0-litre turbo petrol pumps out 160kW and 310Nm in the 125i, while the M135i’s 3.0-litre inline-six turbo makes a meaty 240kW and 450Nm, also up 5kW.

BMW claims the 1 Series hatchback’s facelift – devised by Australian-born designer Calvin Luk – is one of the biggest mid-cycle updates in the brand’s recent history.

Flatter, sharper headlights replace the unloved, droopy fixtures of the updated 1 Series’ predecessor, while wider kidney grilles, reshaped bumpers and L-shaped tail-lights introduce newfound cleanliness and sophistication to the premium hatch’s exterior.

BMW has also tweaked the media and climate controls in the centre stack for a more premium look and feel.
