2016 BMW X1 leaked online

The second-generation BMW X1 has been leaked online just hours ahead of its official debut.

This dynamic front-end shot of the new X1 was posted by user Enl on the German Car Forum website. More brochure and press photos have since been published online by WorldCarFans.

While the original X1, which was launched back in 2009, utilised a rear- and all-wheel drive platform, BMW's next-generation entry-level SUV is based on the front- and all-wheel drive UKL1 platform.

UKL1 made its production debut with the current-generation three- and five-door Mini hatchbacks. UKL1 has since been used on the 2 Series Active Tourer and Gran Tourer mini-people movers.

This architecture will also be employed by the next-generation BMW 1 Series.

As with the new 1 Series hatchback, moving the X1 to a front-wheel drive-based platform should make the new car more space efficient.

If the photos posted so far prove to be accurate, the shift has also enabled BMW's stylists to quash a few of the outgoing car's less appealing visual traits.
