Ute sales spiked in May

Light commercial ute sales appear to have spiked last month, based on early May sales data.

Official VFACTS figures will be revealed tomorrow, but figures we've seen show a jump in one-tonne ute sales of about 22.0 per cent over the same month in 2015.

The monthly jump is well above the year-to-date growth at that end of the market totalling about 3.5 per cent.

Full figures, as we say, will be reported later this week, but it appears that the Toyota HiLux led the segment as usual with combined 4x2 and 4x4 registrations of about 3200 units, down a shade under 4.0 per cent.

Breathing down its neck though, was the Mitsubishi Triton, with about 2700 units — a jump of about 75.0 per cent. The company has been selling the cut-price old model concurrently with the all-new version launched at the end of April.

The Ford Ranger was strong again on about 2400 units (up about 3.5 per cent), ahead of the Holden Colorado (up around 20.0 per cent to 1600 units) and others such as the Isuzu D-Max, with around 1200 units (up 12.0 per cent).

Expect a continued boost in ute sales as the year progresses, considering the new Nissan Navara has just arrived, and the updated Ford Ranger and all-new Toyota HiLux are set for premieres by the fourth-quarter of 2015.

Update: There were unfortunately a few errors in these figures. For the full and correct figures read a detailed summation and breakdown here. Apologies.
