Tesla Model S claims top prize at 2015 Good Design Awards

The all-electric Tesla Model S has made a clean sweep at the 2015 Good Design Awards in Sydney overnight, taking out the Good Design Award of the Year, as well as Best Overall Product Design in the Automotive and Transport category.

Tesla’s success was all the more significant given the level of competition in the category, which included innovative designs like the BMW i3 and Alfa Romeo 4C. Good Design Awards were also given to the all-new Audi TT, Land Rover Discovery Sport, and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and S-Class Coupe.

The latest Peugeot 308 also picked up a Product Design Award in the auto category.

A number of other vehicles achieved Good Design selection including the Ford Transit Custom, Honda HR-V VTi-L, Hyundai Genesis, Renault Captur, Nissan Juke, Subaru Liberty and Outback, Nissan Qashqai and Infiniti Q50 S.

The Model S is the world’s first premium sedan built from the ground up as an electric vehicle (EV), and one of the world’s fastest four-door cars ever. It has also earned the title as one of the safest vehicles ever tested in the USA, as well as having achieved Australia’s best-possible five-star ANCAP safety rating.

Unlike a conventional petrol-fuelled engine with hundreds of moving parts, Tesla electric motors have only one moving piece: the rotor. The result is instantaneous acceleration from the get-go.

The range-topping all-wheel drive Model S P85D can accelerate from 0-100km/h in a staggering 3.3 seconds and has a top speed of 250km/h. It’s maximum range is 480 kilometres.

The Tesla also gets some of the latest technology including a unique 17-inch high-resolution touchscreen that can map your route in conjunction with all available charging stations.

The car’s autopilot system combines a camera, radar, and 360 degree sonar sensors, and in soon-to-be-released software updates  (version 7.0) the car will work with the navigation system's real-time traffic updates and automatically drive on the road. Also coming is the ability to change lanes with the tap of the turn signal, and the Model S will soon be able to park itself, too.

It’s these features plus a tonne of clever storage solutions (front and rear trunks) together with the hidden charge port and regular software updates that are sent wirelessly that make for a truly unique user experience for the Tesla owner.
