Chevrolet adds Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility to its 2016 model range – UPDATE

All up, the company claims that 14 models in its 2016 model year range will be available with headunits that support both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The brand will begin offering cars compatible with both smartphone mirroring standards when it launches the next-generation Chevrolet Cruze in the States on June 24.

Select 2016 model year cars fitted with a 7-inch MyLink infotainment system will be able to use Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The 2016 Spark, Cruze, Malibu, Camaro and Silverado will be offered with this 7-inch unit.

Vehicles fitted with the larger 8-inch MyLink system will, however, be restricted to CarPlay compatibility. Cars on this list include the 2016 model year versions of the Cruze, Malibu, Impala, Volt, Camaro, Corvette, Colorado, Silverado, Silverado HD, Tahoe and Suburban.

Depending on how development and testing pans out, Chevrolet says that "Android Auto compatibility may be available on the 8-inch version of MyLink later in the 2016 model year".

Chevrolet's announcement comes hot on the heels of Hyundai's announcement that its Sonata sedan would be the first vehicle to come with a factory-fit Android Auto-compatible entertainment system.

According to GM, Chevrolet models in Brazil, Canada and Mexico will also soon be equipped with these updated MyLink systems.

GM's local arm, Holden, posted the news about Chevrolet's moves with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay on its Facebook page yesterday. We'll update this article when we find out more from Holden about local availability and timing.
