Torque steer this, torque steer that... bah you're all weak. These cars are super fun to drive, and civilised when not mashing the right foot. Good value for money, fast, and practical. GTi has gone too soft and the tartan pattern sucks balls. XR5 is good also, but lacks a little. Pull up next to Mr.GTi at the lights and leave him/her in your smoke.

mmm, Sounds like your too old and boring to drive a Mazda 3 MPS. Maybe try the Neo instead of an MX5(more your type of car) the design is supposed to be edgy and fast thus looking busy! I love it!!! Keeping it simple, yep I'm going back to the Neo. OMG lmao

From an MPS Gen 2 owner:

1. Yes – hard (but not impossible) to lauch cleanly and get the ponies to the tarmac from standing start. 380nm through the front hoops!
2. Rolling acceleration very, very quick.
3. 80-120 scary!
4. Please Mazda do not ‘refine’ this car. Its hard, fast, audible, and that just the
way we like it.

Yeah, I am pretty sure when they push 191kw and 380Nm of torque through that Golf chassis we'll find just how good it really is! Maybe then we'll also be criticising torque steer characteristics from a German chassis. The MPS wasn't built to compete with a GTi because it would simply blow a GTi out of the water. As a package the Golf V and now Vi compared to either generation MPS are the superior, more sensible options. But these are performance cars and if we focus on why they were built, the MPS will win hands down everytime! I love driving around and seeing those GTi drivers look at me from the corner of their eye knowing full well they simply trying to box out of their weight division. I have a Mk1 MPS with a few upgrades(220kw,480Nm at flywheel) and I can tell you from experience ... I have not come across a GTi who really put up a decent challenge(without playing dirty of course i.e bigger turbos, S3 cams etc). They simply can't cope and most I have driven against have just been slaughtered. The performance of my car is just awesome and I am sure there are many out there who are even more potent.
So to conclude, I have no problem with VWs but drive your overpriced GTi; just be advised you had better show respect and stay out of an MPS's way, for you have no chance.

Have now owned a Gen 2 MPS for 4 months and just had 10,000km service.
In answer to Bob I hope you ended up buying one. Based on my experience I would not hesitate buying another MPS. I'm in my young 50's and over the years have owned Falcon GT's (XY & XA), a couple of XR 6's and most recently a Accord Euro luxury and nothing compares to the enjoyment I get from driving the MPS. As for some of the earlier comments from readers I wander if those commenting have ever been in the MPS let alone driven one. Me, I love having a performance cars but one I can afford and at under $50K drive away I checked out everything in the price range but the the MPS luxury did it for me. If you are considering getting one you will not be disappointed.

I agree with you Hal (your comment / reply to "the realist" dated 24/7/09), people who bought the BMW 130i - brand new back then - more likely than not must have trashed it up to the point hwne the second owners take over. the bimmer would have had a " hard life" while the new Mazda 3 MPS would still have barnd new 3 yrs/100K warranty and likely more reliable too. Yes "the realist" is stupid. Can't compare 85K BMW 130i to 40K Mazda 3 MPS. Tell him the R35 GTR at 150 K would kill the BMW 130 i at 85K.

The MPS was delivered to Mazda dealerships on the Friday. I test drove one on Monday and picked up my new car on Wednesday!!! Was gonna get the standard version, would have had to wait a month - no way!!! Scraped up another 3 grand and got the luxury pack - no regrets. This car can be driven like an old lady or like the 'beast'that it is!! Love everything about it, torque steer not such a biggy - I dont flog the thing anyway. My husband takes it for a "run"on Sundays so she gets to drive like she was designed to be driven. I traded up from a Mazda 3 Maxx Sport. As for being ugly? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Not much different to the WRX to look at anyway. I was accompanied home by a Highway Patrol cop recently (wasn't speeding) so don't tell me it doesn't look mean! Anyway Bob, do yourself a favour, as they say, and go buy one of these babies - you won't be disappointed.
