Peugeot CEO's says that the next-generation Peugeot 508 will be equipped with autonomous driving technology.

According to Automotive News, Carlos Tavares, PSA Peugeot Citroen's CEO, told the company's annual meeting that the next-generation Peugeot 508 will be equipped with a larger selection of driver assistance features, including some autonomous driving technology.

Although Tavares didn't go into specifics, a company spokesperson told the trade publication that the next-gen 508 would feature automated braking in traffic, on highways and during parking. The new 508 will also be available with hands-free steering.

The next-generation Peugeot 508 is expected to debut in 2017. Based on the company's EMP2 platform, the new 508 will again be the company's flagship sedan.

It's believed that the second-generation 508 will be given two main tasks. Firstly, it will fight its traditional foes, the fleet-friendly large sedans from mass market brands, such as the Ford Mondeo, Opel Insignia and the merged Renault Laguna/Latitude replacement.

Secondly, the tech-laden 508 is expected to help continue the French brand's push upmarket.
