Weekend deals on wheels

It's time for the latest Weekend Deals on Wheels, which looks at four factory-backed special offers for all you weekend shoppers.

Toyota HiLux SR 4x4 Dual Cab — $39,990 drive-away

The new-generation Toyota HiLux may be getting revealed next week, but it won’t actually go on sale until the final quarter of 2015.

It means the current version is not really on runout, and that’s why this deal seems particularly strong — especially for a HiLux. Perhaps the heat of competition from the Ranger and Triton, and the forthcoming new Navara?

Generally, the HiLux SR 4x4 dual cab costs $42,490 plus on-roads with its trusty 3.0 turbo-diesel engine and manual gearbox. This equates to an on-road price of about $46,600 in Victoria (slight variance occurs between states due to taxes).

So getting one for $39,990 drive-away represents a very strong saving.

Standard equipment includes six airbags (five-star ANCAP rating), 17-inch steel wheels on all-terrain tyres, electric windows, a 6.1-inch LCD display with USB/AUX, voice recognition and Bluetooth.

Lexus RX 270 — $59,888 drive-away

Ok, right off the bat — the Lexus RX270 is not what we’d consider a class-leader in the luxury SUV race.

But it’s normally a $64,500 proposition, before on-road costs. Once you pay all those charges, it becomes about $73,600 (in Victoria, again).

Therefore, Lexus is offering a saving here of about $14,000. Keep in mind that a much smaller Lexus NX200t costs about $59,000 drive-away at base level, and the RX 270 becomes pretty solid value.

Maybe all this is because RX sales are down 20.0 per cent this year in a segment that is growing?

Incidentally, Lexus is also offering the IS 250 Luxury for $52,888, a saving of about $8000.

Kia Rio S — $15,490 drive-away*

This special offer price of $15,990 (why do we say $15,490? Read below) isn’t overly special for five-door light cars at the minute — lots of rivals, even the Renault Clio, can be had for about as much.

The Kia Rio has a few advantages, though. Firstly, it comes with an industry-leading seven-year/unlimited kilometre warranty and roadside assist.

Buyers can also opt for a special 1.0 per cent comparison rate instead of the special pricing. You can’t get both. An automatic transmission costs an extra $2000 in either scenario.

*Furthermore, Kia gives students, war veterans, senior citizens and Essendon AFL club members a further $500 discount.

Audi Q7 with Technik pack — $97,990 drive-away

It’s getting on in years, the Audi Q7, but that means you can get a good deal. Is it a class-leader? No. But it’s spacious and well-equipped, with a punchy 180kW/550Nm diesel engine.

The 3.0 TDI generally has a drive-away price, depending on state, of around $102,000, or a list price of $91,500.

But right now — on account of the current model being in runout as the new-generation car nears — you can score one for $97,990 drive-away before haggling begins.

Furthermore, Audi will give you freebies such as Audi parking system plus with front and reversing cameras, Audi Connect+ multimedia, BOSE surround sound system, rear privacy glass, and four-zone ‘deluxe’ air conditioning.
