Fiat Chrysler Australia prices rise as Australian dollar continues dive

The Australian dollar’s continued downward spiral relative to the greenback has forced Fiat Chrysler Australia to raise the price of six models in its stable, delivering increases of up to 4.9 per cent.

The price rises, officially introduced in March, affect the Abarth 595, Alfa Romeo MiTo, Dodge Journey, Fiat Freemont, and Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee line-ups, with increases ranging from $500 to $2000.

The price rise is the second in 12 months for most Grand Cherokee and Wrangler variants, following a similar round of increases in July last year.

A $2000 increase for the Grand Cherokee SRT, now $82,000 plus on-road costs, means it’s now $5000 more expensive than it was a year ago, following a $3000 price rise last July.

Additionally, Grand Cherokee Limited and Overland V6 diesel and V8 petrol variants are up $2000, the Laredo diesel is up $1500, while all other variants are between $500 and $1000 more than before.

The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon has risen from $49,000 to $51,000. The price of a number of other Wrangler variants has also increased between $1000 and $2000, including the entry-level two-door Wrangler Sport manual, which now kicks off the range at $34,000 (up $1000).

FCA has added $1000 to the price of all Dodge Journey and Fiat Freemont variants with the exception of the Journey R/T Blacktop and Freemont Urban diesel, which are unchanged.

Abarth 595 prices are up $500 across the board, meaning that range now starts at $34,000 for the Turismo manual and tops out at $41,500 for the Competizione convertible auto.

Finally, FCA has added $500 to the Alfa Romeo MiTo Progression manual (now $25,000), $1000 to the Distinctive auto (now $29,000), and $1500 to the sporty QV (now $32,000).

There are no specification changes for any of the above models.

An FCA spokesperson told CarAdvice the price changes reflected the declining value of the Australian dollar versus the US dollar and the intense pressure our weakening currency was having on the local division’s bottom line.

“Recent changes in currency value between the Australian and US dollar have led to a small increase in price for certain models in our range.

“Fortunately we have managed to ensure those increases are but a small percentage when compared to the amount the Australian dollar has weakened over the past three years.”

The spokesperson said FCA’s price adjustments – typically between 2.5 and 4.5 per cent – were far from proportional to the currency fluctuation, which has seen the Australian dollar weaken against the US dollar by approximately 16 per cent in the past six months and 27 per cent over the past three years.

“FCA continually works to improve processes and build efficiencies within the company. One of the benefits of this is that we can continue to supply our products at competitive prices.

“The recent success of FCA has, in part, come from our commitment to offering the best possible value to our customers.

“The increase in sales volume of FCA products in Australia has brought economies of scale, which fortunately enables the company to absorb some of the impact of currency changes and continue to offer the product ranges at the most competitive price possible.

“All FCA products are competitively priced in relation to their competitors and all offer excellent value.”
