BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage to pay tribute to 1970s ‘Batmobile’

BMW will celebrate the godfather of its current performance car range next week when it unveils the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage design concept at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Lake Como, Italy.

The image above is an artist’s impression, teasing the rear corner of the 3.0 CSL Hommage and confirming it will indeed be a modern interpretation of the iconic 1970s BMW 3.0 CSL coupe affectionately known as the Batmobile.

Believed to be based on the modern-day BMW M4 coupe, the 3.0 CSL Hommage features a huge rear spoiler that flows into monstrously flared rear wheel arches.

BMW i8-inspired LED tail-lights follow the line of the rear wing and extend beneath it to the rear pillars, where the Hommage gets BMW badges in another nod to last century’s classic.

As with the original which traded steel and glass for aluminium and Perspex, BMW claims the Hommage incorporates “cutting edge materials” including “extensive use of carbonfibre for the lower section” of its body to cut unnecessary weight.

More heft is shed inside the 3.0 CSL Hommage. BMW says “all the elements in the cabin are absolutely essential [with] a high-quality structural or driving-related function”, suggesting a stripped-out, racecar-like finish.

Full details and images of the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage will be revealed when it makes its world premiere in Lake Como on May 22.
