2016 Audi Q1 development mule spied

Car Advice's spy photographers have spotted a mule for the upcoming Audi Q1 crossover in Europe.

At first glance, this vehicle looks like any other Volkswagen Tiguan that you might see on the roads. Look closer, though, and you'll notice that this vehicle is wearing thicker and temporary plastic wheel arch extensions that don't extend into the rear door panel.

Additionally, the letters "IN" at the beginning of this car's German number plates indicate that it's registered in Ingolstadt, Audi's home town.

Most crucially, this development car is riding on Audi alloy wheels, and has a slightly shorter wheelbase and narrower track than the production Tiguan, indicating that the production Q1 will be smaller than Volkswagen's smallest SUV.

We believe that the new Q1 will end up being around the same size as the three-door Audi A3, albeit with greater ground clearance and a much higher roof line.

Despite the mule's Tiguan body shell, the Q1 will utilise the Volkswagen Group's MQB component set of transverse engine front- and all-wheel drive vehicles.

The Audi Q1 was confirmed back in 2013 and, last we heard from the bosses at Audi, the small crossover is scheduled to debut some time in 2016.

As far as Australia is concerned, we were told late last year that the Q1 will arrive down under in either late 2016 or early 2017, depending on the date of its international launch.
