Jaguar XE :: Initial specifications revealed – UPDATED

Specifications of the Jaguar XE have appeared on the car maker’s public website three months out from the highly anticipated mid-sized sedan’s Australian launch.

The configurator, based on global information about the new Jaguar XE, lists five variants (Pure, Prestige, R-Sport, Portfolio and S) and four engines (a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel, two tunes of a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol, and 3.0-litre supercharged V6). While not confirming final specifications for the local market, the information provides some clues to the make-up of the range when it arrives here in August.

Jaguar's online configurator lists a host of standard features for the entry-level XE Pure including auto headlights and wipers, front and rear parking sensors, keyless entry with push-button start, electric park brake, cruise control, driver’s seat memory function, dual-zone climate control with rear vents, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen with SD card navigation and dynamic route guidance, Bluetooth phone connectivity with audio streaming, and text-to-speech technology.

Standard safety equipment includes autonomous emergency braking with a forward-facing camera, lane departure warning, electronic stability control and six airbags, while chassis features include torque vectoring, hill start assist and Jaguar’s drive control modes function. A reverse-view camera isn’t listed in the Pure’s global standard equipment list, though it's likely a camera will be made standard in Australia.

The configurator says the second-tier XE Prestige adds a reverse-view camera along with electric folding mirrors with heating, auto dimming, memory settings, puddle lamps and clear indicators. It’s likely to also gain other features not listed on the configurator site.

The performance-themed XE R-Sport variant gets a black grille with chrome surround, racy front bumper, body-colour side sills, chrome side power vents with R-Sport badges, rear spoiler, and R-Sport interior sill finishers.

The configurator says the XE Portfolio gets headlight washers, which indicates it’s also likely to feature upgraded headlamps. Again, the Portfolio is likely to benefit from a number of other standard features to distinguish it from the other variants in the line-up.

The flagship Jaguar XE S gets a sports body kit, red brake calipers and Jaguar’s adaptive dynamics system, among other unique features.

The configurator also lists a number of options packages: the Lighting Pack with adaptive xenon headlamps with cornering lamps, washers and intelligent high beam; the Cold Climate Pack with heated front windscreen, heated washer jets, heated front seats and heated steering wheel; and the Advanced Parking Assist Pack with Proximity Camera with 360-degree sensors, 360-degree camera, and semi-automated parking.

Pure, Prestige and R-Sport are available with the Luxury Pack, which adds keyless entry, push-button start, 380-watt Meridian audio system, air quality sensor, xenon headlamps, LED daytime running lights and headlamp washers, while the Portfolio is available exclusively with the Premium Pack, which includes 14-way electric front seats, electric opening boot, adaptive xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, variable light distribution and headlamps washers.

A Highway Technology Pack is available on all variants above Pure, adding adaptive cruise control, infrared reflective glass, head-up display, and blind spot monitor with reverse traffic detection.

Customers who opt for the Pure can select between the diesel and entry petrol engines.

The diesel produces 132kW at 4000rpm and 430Nm between 1750-2500rpm. Combined cycle fuel consumption is rated at just 4.2 litres per 100 kilometres, while accelerating from 0-100km/h takes 7.8 seconds.

The base petrol makes 147kW at 5500rpm and 280Nm between 1750-4000rpm. The sprint from zero to 100km/h takes 7.7 seconds, and it uses 7.5L/100km combined.

The Prestige and R-Sport variants are available with the same two engines, as well as the high-power version of the 2.0-litre turbo petrol, which produces 177kW and 340Nm at the same engine speeds as the low-power petrol, matches it for fuel consumption hits triple figures 0.9sec faster (6.8sec). The high-power 2.0-litre petrol engine is the only option in Portfolio spec.

The XE S uniquely gets the 3.0-litre V6 supercharged petrol engine from the F-Type sports car. It produces 250kW at 6500rpm and 450Nm at 4500rpm, launches from 0-100km/h in 5.1 seconds and burns through 8.1L/100km combined.

All models in the Jaguar XE range feature an eight-speed automatic transmission that sends drive to the rear wheels.

Pricing is unconfirmed at this stage, though the XE will be competitive with the segment leaders, including the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3 Series and Audi A4. As with those rivals, pricing will likely start at about $60,000 plus on-road costs, while the sporty XE S is expected to nudge $100,000.

Official pricing and specification details will be revealed ahead of the Jaguar XE’s local launch in August.
