Volkswagen Golf with a Targa-top, anyone?

The next all-new Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet is a number of years away yet, but the company is considering an additional, and rather fascinating, idea to complement it.

Firstly, Volkswagen’s next properly new soft-top Golf, rather than being spun off the current Golf VII, looks set to be based on the eighth-generation Golf due in 2017/18.

In the meantime, the German maker will continue to produce and sell the existing Golf Cabriolet, which is based on a previous-generation Golf hatch. Volkswagen has taken this strategy in the past, given it never sold a Golf V-based cabrio either.

However, a concept premiered at the Geneva motor show in March 2014, called the T-Roc (pictured above and below), might hold a solution to either bridge a gap, or expand the Golf family even further once the Golf VIII arrives, depending on as-yet undetermined timing.

The T-Roc, as well as previewing the design language of the brand new, MQB-based five- and seven-seater Tiguan due to launch before September this year, also came with a novel Targa roof design.

This design, which denotes removable roof panels that make it a kind of pseudo convertible, might just make its way to the humble Golf hatch.

Company insiders speaking with us at the European launch of the Golf R wagon and Golf Alltrack this week told CarAdvice that a Targa roof had been discussed as a potential next step for the enormous Golf range, beyond the hatch and wagon.

“It’s more than just an idea,” our source said, indicating it had been discussed at high levels as an option.

The key, as we understand it, is gauging interest. Any concept, including T-Roc, is discussed with dealers, and with the public via the media. Once this interest is determined, the Volkswagen Board makes a call.

As we know, a production version of the T-Roc SUV to take on the likes of the Range Rover Evoque convertible is also considered a strong possibility.

We do know that Volkswagen is determined to add some sex appeal to some of its designs, as shown by the Sport Coupe Concept GTE that we saw last month in Geneva.

Of course, that might mean it’s just idle chatter about hypotheticals among company executives, but is nevertheless fun to speculate.

What do you think of the idea of a Targa-top Golf?
