Qoros 2 Concept revealed

The Qoros 2 Concept baby SUV has been revealed at the 2015 Shanghai motor show, powered by the Chinese brand's first ever plug-in hybrid drivetrain.

Described as a concept model that offers pointers to "possible future design, technology and product expansion strategies for the brand", the Qoros 2 debuts a new design direction for the upstart maker on its "possible future entrant into the world’s fastest growing passenger car segment, the B-segment".

"The 2 Concept combines Shanghai spirit with German-inspired design," the brand claims, with the pint-sized high-rider clearly aimed at the raft of current crossovers. It measures just 4181 millimetres long and 1553mm tall, and its 2030mm wide including the side mirrors.

It looks broad and substantial, but its styling is dramatically different to the current Qoros 3 models, and at a glance it almost looks like some of Cadillac's most recent efforts.

The drivetrain consists of a ultra-high density batteries built into the chassis floor, as well as two electric motors powering the rear wheels. Under the bonnet and powering the front wheels is a petrol turbocharged engine, meaning the car can be operated in four-wheel drive.

There are four modes to choose: pure electric; "Sport" which uses front- and all-wheel drive to ensure the best possible traction; permanent all-wheel drive for slippery surfaces; and "Hybrid", which the brand claims is the most efficient mode of operating, aims to keep the batteries charged and only calls on the electric motors when required.

Charging requires no cables, but there are two means of adding range to the batteries: the first is a foldable charging 'probe' is hidden under a cover at the base of the windscreen, and it pops out at the touch of a button- it's an inductive system, which the company claims is "an industry first"; the other is an inductive charging system.

There's no word yet as to when a production version of the Qoros 2 will be available.
