Mitsubishi Triton gets five-star ANCAP result

The new Mitsubishi Triton has scored a much-needed five-star result in the latest round of ANCAP safety testing.

By attaining the top score against the latest - and toughest - criteria, the Triton is now available to a number of large-scale fleets that make five-star cars a prerequisite.

It also means the Mitsubishi joins rivals such as the Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger, Mazda BT-50, Isuzu D-Max, Holden Colorado and Volkswagen Amarok in achieving the maximum possible safety score.

However, unlike on some (not all) of these offerings, the five-star result covers each Triton cab style. A number of rivals (excluding Mazda) score only four stars for their 4x2 cab-chassis versions, but not Mitsubishi.

The Triton gets a comprehensive range of active and passive safety features including dual-front, side and curtain airbags and a driver’s knee airbag.

Seat belt reminders are fitted to all seats across its Single, Club and Double Cab model range, along with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA).

A reverse-view camera will be available as a standard feature on some variants and a "genuine accessory" on remaining models.

The new-generation Triton launches locally at the end of April. Its predecessor — the second top-selling ute on the market behind the HiLux in March — managed four stars.

Long a hit among private buyers due to its extremely competitive pricing, the score will allow Mitsubishi to potentially broaden its net to more fleets. Provided it can keep its pricing sharp, it can reasonably expect a benefit to its sales.

“Triton has built a long-standing reputation as an honest, reliable and durable light commercial vehicle in Australia, and the fifth-generation Triton takes this to a new level,” said Mitsubishi Motors Australia CEO Mutsuhiro Oshikiri.

“The new Triton has been developed with passenger car-like attributes of comfort, quietness and advanced safety, while retaining Triton’s traditional durability and toughness."

ANCAP also announced five stars for a few other newly launched models this week, though unlike the Triton these were not tested locally. Rather, they’re based on the findings of partner organisation Euro NCAP.

These include the Land Rover Discovery Sport, Renault Captur, BMW i3 (which, oddly, gets four stars in Europe) and Tesla Model S.
