2016 Mercedes-Benz C-Class cabriolet spied nearing production

The next-generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class cabriolet is the latest vehicle to be nabbed by our spy photographers' itchy shutter fingers.

This prototype was spotted right outside Daimler's research and development headquarters in Sindelfingen, Germany. Unlike in earlier spy photos, this vehicle is wearing production-ready tail-lights, trim pieces and grille, not to mention less camouflage than before.

As with the C-Class coupe, which was spied earlier this week dancing around in the Swedish snow, the convertible seen here features, what seems to be, a false set of panels affixed to the trailing edge of the boot lid. This gives the prototype a look reminiscent of the previous-generation BMW 6-Series.

Up front, the upcoming C-Class cabrio sports headlights that are very similar to those employed on the current C-Class and S-Class sedans.

At the rear, the convertible features a tapered boot lid flanked by slimline tail-light modules, which resemble the units fitted to the S-Class coupe. While the BMW 4 Series is equipped with folding hardtop, the C-Class cabriolet is fitted with a fabric top.

Compared to the popular the C-Class sedan and wagon, which was recently crowned 2015 World Car of the Year, the convertible and the coupe both feature frameless side windows and flag post-style wing mirrors.

Under the skin, the C-Class cabriolet will likely feature most of the four-, six- and eight-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines employed elsewhere in the C-Class range.

The C-Class cabriolet, and the companion coupe model, are expected to debut at the 2015 Frankfurt motor show, which takes place in September.
