2016 Lexus ES to debut at Shanghai motor show

The 2016 Lexus ES luxury sedan will be unveiled at the Shanghai motor show later this month.

A teaser image of the heavily facelifted model has been revealed ahead of the event, with new IS-like headlights and what looks to be a far more aggressive 'spindle' grille.

The design tweaks, which include sharply cut boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights and a more heavily sculptured front bumper, should bring the conservatively styled three-year-old Lexus ES up to date with the Japanese manufacturer's more recent and striking designs, such as the RC coupe, NX crossover, and the new-generation RX SUV.

Lexus says the 2016 updates will "maintain the model line's elegance while conveying a more dynamic and luxurious experience".

A Lexus Australia spokesman confirmed the updated ES would reach local showrooms later this year, but said exact timing was unclear at this stage.

The ES has been a solid contributor for Lexus Australia since it rejoined the range in 2013 to fill the niche between IS and GS sedans. The local division sold 667 ES's across the country last year, beating the Infiniti Q50 (197) and the Volvo S60 (629), although sales have slipped 23.5 per cent so far this year to 117 despite the segment rising 31.2 per cent overall.

The 2016 Lexus ES will debut at Shanghai Auto 2015, which kicks off on April 20.
