Karmann to re-open doors?

July 9, 2009 by Matt Brogan

You might recall a couple of weeks back we reported on Karmann closing its doors – well it now seems the German manufacturer could be set to make a Volkswagen funded comeback.

According to the German newspaper Neue Osnabruecker Zeitung, VW’s US$14 million contract will be enough to bring Karmann back from the dead with plans to convert the manufacturer in to a production house for Electric Vehicles that could possibly include the upcoming VW Up! (pictured).

Although details are a bit thin the funds could see as many as 1600 employees re-hired.

CarAdvice will keep you posted on any developments.

An excellent move by Volkswagen to retain a name that was associated with pleasure in the modern world. Well done!

    *****PRIMO!*****

That’s VERY good news!A long established and respected brandname.

I for one don’t want to see ANY car brand or supplier close down, not even skoda! :-), if that happens the consumer suffers with less choice.

And of course 100’s if not 1000’s can lose their job, which is bad on ALL fronts and in general the man-on-the-street will end up paying in one way or another.

    Cheers
