2015 Chevrolet Spark turbocharged hot-hatch a chance
The 2015 Chevrolet Spark was revealed today at the Seoul motor show with a 1.4-litre four-cylinder atmo petrol engine, but something punchier could be on the cards.
CarAdvice asked president and CEO of GM Korea, Sergio Rocha, about the possibility of a turbocharged Spark entering production, giving the company a miniature hot hatch.
"The answer is very simple," he said.
"We are very closely monitoring the trends and needs of our markets. If tomorrow we get a clear indication that there is a requirement for a Spark turbo, we will answer accordingly."
When quizzed further on Spark turbo, Rocha wouldn't rule out the possibility of one entering production, saying that he is not ruling it out entirely, but equally he is not saying that it would definitely enter production.
If it were to become a model, the Spark turbo would potentially carve its own niche, given its competitors don't currently offer a sporty micro segment vehicle.
Given the last model's presence in Australia, it's likely that the regular Chevrolet Spark launched today hints strongly at the next-generation Holden Barina Spark confirmed for Australia in 2016, when it will compete with the likes of the Fiat 500, Mitsubishi Mirage, Nissan Micra and Suzuki Celerio in Australia’s sub-$15,000 micro segment.
The Chevrolet Spark launches with a number of customisation options that will give customers an ability to create a unique vehicle. Australian engineers have been heavily involved in the development process of the Barina Spark, so we expect the handling, ride and mechanics to be vastly improved for the car's local launch in 2016.
