McLaren 570S Coupe revealed : British Porsche 911 rival outed

McLaren has just premiered the first member of its new Sports Series range, the 570S Coupe, in New York.

This new entry point to the British brand’s arsenal is a price-point rival to the Porsche 911 Turbo and forthcoming all-new Audi R8, and slots in beneath the Ferrari-matching 650S.

It’s the first member of McLaren's Sports Series range, and arrives ahead of an expected convertible Spider version, as well as a lower-powered 540C version for the Asian market premiering in April in Shanghai.

Despite offering supercar credentials, the new series is the closest thing the company will offer to an ‘entry level’ daily driver. It is expected to arrive in Australia later this year priced well below the 650's $441,500 pricetag.

The Sports Series range will be the entry family in McLaren’s three-tier range, which also comprises the Super Series (650 and 675 LT) and the Ultimate Series (the P1 hypercar).

As we have previously reported, it will form a huge part in McLaren’s road car expansion, given it is expected to easily double the company’s global road car output from about 1600 cars per annum at present to more like 4000 by 2016/17.

The 570S is a mid-engined, rear-drive coupe with a carbon-fibre structure and a signature ‘shrinkwrapped’ design that echoes the P1, with flying buttresses to boost aero performance.

Under the bonnet is a 420kW/600Nm 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine matched to a seven-speed SSG semi-automatic gearbox that propels the 1313kg coupe — 150kg lighter than any rival — from 0-100km/h in a McLaren F1-matching 3.2 seconds.

The 200 km/h mark is reached in 9.5 seconds with the pace not letting up till the car reaches a top speed of 328 km/h. The car is reigned in by standard-fit carbon ceramic brakes, fitted behind forged alloy wheels shod with 225/35/R19 front and 285/35/R20 rear Pirelli P Zero Corsa tyres.

McLaren staff at the New York reveal said the company had spent a lot of time working on the aural experience, with much of the track development devoted to achieving a harmonic engine note.

The unique carbon fibre MonoCell II chassis has been newly designed with “more of a focus on day-to-day usability”, McLaren claims, offering improved ingress and egress from the cabin. It is “incredibly strong and stiff” yet weighs less than 80kg.

According to McLaren, the striking appearance has been “designed by air” — in other words, designers were slaves to the wind tunnel. Luckily, the wind tunnel sometimes abets sexy design.

Flying buttresses at the rear of the teardrop-shaped glasshouse form part of the aero package, directing air over the shoulder line and across the rear deck, aiding heat evacuation from the exposed engine bay and increasing downforce.

Super-formed aluminium rear fenders ensure clean air is delivered to the fixed rear spoiler, again maximising downforce. The rear of the vehicle features an aluminium mesh allowing effective heat evacuation as well as a view into the engine bay.

The Sports Series has a newly-developed suspension system featuring independent adaptive dampers with front and rear anti-roll bars – distinct from the Super Series –  and dual wishbones, with the setup controlled by the familiar ‘Normal’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Track’ handling settings.

The cabin is designed with day-to-day usability in mind “more than any McLaren before it,” the company claims. Cushier leather sports seats are standard, while racing buckets are an option. The dashboard and steering wheel are also all leather trimmed.

There’s also the most usable cabin stowage space of any McLaren model to date. This adds to the 150 litres of storage in the front luggage bay.

The 570S gets an all new TFT digital instrument cluster that changes configuration according to driving mode, a seven-inch touchscreen with integrated climate control, Bluetooth connectivity and DAB+radio mounted on a ‘floating’ centre console.

The McLaren Audio four-speaker system ensures the optimal sound quality at the lowest possible weight.
