Lotus Exige S Club Racer:: road racer sheds 15kg but can’t better performance claims

The already lightweight Lotus Exige S has shed kilos and gained unique equipment with the arrival of the new Lotus Exige S Club Racer.

Based on the already spritely Exige S coupe (pictured below), the Lotus Exige S Club Racer teams a 257.5kW/400Nm supercharged 3.5-litre V6 engine with a six-speed manual transmission.

Despite tipping the scales at 1161kg – 15kg lighter than the standard Exige S – the new Club Racer maintains the S’s 4.0-second 0-100km/h time and 274km/h top speed performance claim.

Helping to cut weight are a new lightweight battery, lighter doors, a lightweight centre console, and lightweight sports seats available in either leather or Alcantara with colour coded stitching.

Available in Metallic White, Exige Orange, Metallic Yellow and (optional) Matt Black, the coupe-only Lotus Exige S Club Racer can be differentiated by its matt black front splitter, front access panel, roof, rear wing, wing mirrors and rear tail-light panel. It also sports ‘Club Racer’ decals inside and out.

A three-mode traction control system is standard too, allowing drivers to switch between ‘Drive’, ‘Sport’ and ‘Race’ modes – the latter two increasing throttle response.

Claiming that adding the Club Racer “ethos” to the Exige enhances the model’s track-focussed potential, Group Lotus CEO Jean-Marc Gales said the Exige S CR encompasses the brand’s reputation for benchmark handling and lightweight construction.

“[And shows] that we will always put a peerless and pure driving experience first.”

The Lotus Exige S Club Racer isn’t expected to arrive in Australia before quarter four 2015 at the earliest, with manual versions to lob ahead of those fitted with the Exige S's contentious paddle-shifted six-speed automatic transmission. Prices will be announced closer to launch, however, they will no doubt eclipse the manual and automatic base cars' starting prices of $132,990 and $137,990 respectively.

It's been a busy time for the Malaysian-owned British marque, with the Elise 20th Anniversary special edition and 298kW/410Nm Evora 400 (pictured above) all recently making headlines.
