Maserati production slows – report
Demand for Maserati luxury cars appears to be tapering off, with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles cutting vehicle production at its Grugliasco plant near Turin, according to a union within the manufacturer.
Automotive News Europe has reported, via a source, that shifts at the plant have dropped from 12 to 10 per week, indicating that demand for the brand's best sellers, the Maserati Ghibli and Quattroporte, could be tapering.
"Fiat has told us that workers at the Grugliasco plant will be working for three weeks out of four up until July," said Federico Bellono, CGIL union leader in Turin.
"The company is predicting production of about 30,000 to 35,000 cars at Grugliasco this year. I think it will be closer to 30,000," Bellono told Automotive News Europe.
Maserati sales were in fact up 137 per cent last year globally and almost 200 per cent in Australia, following the launch of its newest models, the Maserati Ghibli and Quattroporte. This is on the back of Maserati's ambitious plans to net 50,000 sales per year by 2015.
Sales and production are expected to pick up again with the arrival of the Maserati Levante crossover, along with the Alfieri sports car and new GranTurismo.
Maserati is yet to officially confirm or deny the production slump.
