2015 Peugeot 3008 pricing and specifications

The updated Peugeot 3008 has been launched in Australia with revised frontal styling, a more streamlined model range and better value across the board.

Furthermore, the company has also re-positioned the model — what has until now been marketed as a small hatchback will now be marketed as a crossover SUV, more befitting of its tallboy design.

Launched in the year 2008, the Peugeot 3008’s configuration as a front-drive tall hatch came a little ahead of the crossover boom that has rendered vehicles of this type increasingly ubiquitous. Small SUV sales are the fastest growing market segment in terms of total volume, bar none.

Marketing the car as a pseudo hatch or MPV clearly hasn’t worked, given the company sold only 115 last year, averaging fewer than 10 sales per month.

Peugeot hasn’t actually changed the car’s configuration, but given it always straddled segments, opting to market the 3008 as a left-field compliment to the existing 2008 and 4008 small SUVs can’t hurt.

“To he honest we got the positioning wrong,” said Peugeot Australia director John Startari, citing that market acceptance of 2WD crossovers is not just higher, but becoming the “norm”.

Peugeot will now offer the 3008 in one specification level, called the Active, with the choice between a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol with 115kW/240Nm that uses a claimed 7.7 litres per 100km, or a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel with 120kW/340Nm that sips 6.6L/100km.

Both are matched to a six-speed automatic transmission.

The former is now priced from $35,490 plus on-road costs, while the diesel costs $38,990. Both versions are now $1000 cheaper than before, aligning the 3008 ever closer to ‘traditional’ crossover such as the top-line Nissan Qashqai Ti.

The Qashqai comparison is apt, given the dimensions of the 3008 (4365mm long, 1837mm wide, 1639mm high on a 2613mm wheelbase) are similar.

While the car is stylistically similar to the pre-facelift model, it now has a different grille and fog light design. Peugeot calls it “softer and more modern”.

The Active gets new equipment including a pop-up 7.0-inch screen with satellite-navigation and a reverse camera. Other standard features include LED daytime running lights and a boosted Arkamys sound system.

Additional features include cruise control with speed-limiter, rear parking sensors, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers and an electric parking brake. There are two ISOFIX anchors. The 3008 scored a five-star NCAP rating in 2010.

Buyers can also add a Premium Pack for an additional $3500, which adds full leather seats with heating, a colour heads-up display projected onto a pop-up glass screen, rear window sun blinds and a panoramic glass roof.

The only other option is $990 metallic paint or $1050 pearlescent paint.

As before, a highlight of the 3008 is its considerable cabin space and practicality. It gets a split rear tailgate, a tiered and removable secondary cargo floor. Cargo space is 435 litres with the seats in place, and up to 1604L with them folded flat (even with a full-size spare wheel underneath).

There’s also storage space hidden under the rear footwells, while the front passenger seat folds flat alongside the rear seats (which can be dropped via a latch in the cargo area), giving the 3008 a 2.5-metre long loading area. There are also various hidey holes totalling 50L.
