Skoda seven-seat SUV spied during testing

CarAdvice's spy photographers have spotted a mule of Skoda's new large SUV undergoing testing in Europe.

The prototype vehicle is clothed in panels borrowed from the Yeti. The new car's larger dimensions are evident through the use of sizeable wheel arch extensions, lengthened rear doors and tall sill panels.

Winfried Vahland, Skoda's global chief, told CarAdvice at the 2015 Geneva motor show that the new SUV "will for sure come to Australia".

Styling for the large Skoda SUV is expected to follow the template laid down by the Skoda Superb sedan and Fabia hatchback. A computer-generated image we published in August is believed to give an accurate impression of how the new SUV will look when it's unveiled next year.

The as-yet-unnamed SUV will based on the Volkswagen Group's MQB transverse engine front- and all-wheel-drive platform kit. The new large Skoda SUV will be made by the Czech firm alongside a production version of the Seat 20V20 concept.

Drivetrains are expected to be shared largely with recently unveiled Skoda Superb large car.

Names that have so far been linked to the new Skoda SUV include Snowman and Polar. Interestingly the prototype caught by our spy photographers has the name Amundsen written on it.

Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian explorer, led the first successful mission to the South Pole. Amundsen's team reached their destination on 14 December 1911, around five weeks ahead of Robert F. Scott. While Scott's party perished during their return leg, Amundsen and his team made it back to their base camp safely.
