2015 Ford EcoSport revealed – UPDATED

The 2015 Ford EcoSport has been unveiled, with the mini SUV showing off a range of changes at the 2015 Geneva motor show.

The revised model is said to "deliver significant styling, drive dynamics and equipment upgrades", including being offered for the first time without the cumbersome rear-door-mounted spare wheel, which is currently standard. As we previously reported, the new standard EcoSport offering will be a tyre repair kit, but buyers will still be able to order an EcoSport with a spare if they so choose.

The rear door remains hinged at the side, rather than the conventional way, but Ford says it has revised the way the door opens, so it can be partially swung rather than fully extended (a good thing, given one of our chief criticisms of the practicality of the car is that kerb-side-swinging door that requires plenty of space).

There have been other notable changes, including - for European models, at least - a reduced ride height (down 10 millimetres) to enhance the way the car drives, as well as suspension retuning with revised spring and damper rates, revised steering and rethought electronic stability control systems.

Inside the car sees a range of changes, too, with a restyled instrument cluster with a chrome surround and dimming for the dash illumination, chrome tips on the window switches, and extra sound deadening for improved cabin comfort. Some markets will also see a Winter Pack on offer, including a heated windscreen, heated mirrors and heated front seats, and Titanium variants will also see partial leather seat trim.

Further changes are coming to the EcoSport, too - the brand has confirmed the car will be offered with satellite navigation and a reverse-view camera system "later this year", which suggests the brand will update the dash with a new touchscreen media interface.

The model seen in these images is the "sporty EcoSport S", which will be on sale in Europe from June. It features a black roof and mirror caps, new 17-inch wheels finished in black, a rear diffuser and tinted glass.

UPDATE: Ford Australia has notified CarAdvice that the Australian models will not see the abovementioned changes, with the revised models destined only for Europe.

The EcoSport isn't performing overly well in Australia. In February, just 70 examples of the small Ford SUV were sold, well down on the likes of the Holden Trax (337 units) and Honda HR-V (825).
