The plug-in hybrid Koenigsegg Regera supercar was unveiled overnight at the 2015 Geneva motor show.

Despite the presence of a petrol engine, three electric motors and a charging point, Koenigsegg would rather that we not refer to the Regera as a plug-in hybrid. Founder Christian von Koenigsegg isn’t a fan of the term hybrid, so the system drivetrain powering the Regera has christened the Koenigsegg Direct Drive Transmission instead.

It features, at its heart, a dry-sump 5.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 cranking out 820kW of power and 1280Nm of torque. Redlined at 8250rpm, the V8 produces maximum power and torque at 7800rpm and 4100rpm, respectively.

Fitted to the motor’s crank is a 160kW/300Nm electric motor and a 9kWh battery. The V8 engine is directly connected to a final drive unit that’s coupled to a 180kW/260Nm electric motor for each of the rear wheels.

Working in unison, the drivetrain is able to deliver a maximum of 1119kW of power and 2000Nm of torque. With a curb weight of 1628kg, the Regera is said to be able to race from 0-400km/h in less than 20 seconds.

The Regera’s battery pack can be recharged by mains electricity via port hidden behind the car’s rear number plate. Electric-only driving range is estimated to be 50 kilometres.

The Regera rides on 19-inch wheels clad in 275/35 Michelin rubber up front and 20-inch rims mated to 345/30 tyres at the rear. Stopping power is provided by 397mm ceramic discs and six-piston calipers up front, with 380mm ceramic discs and four-piston calipers at the rear.

Underneath the Regera’s carbonfibre and kevlar body panels is a carbonfibre and aluminium honeycomb chassis. The two-seat supercar’s structural hard-top can be removed and stowed in a space under the bonnet.

Production of the Koenigsegg Regera will be limited to just 80 units.
