The 2015 Toyota Corolla hatchback has been revealed in further images and with new details at the 2015 Geneva motor show.

Described as being “substantially upgraded” by Toyota‘s local arm, the new-look Corolla hatchback – which is sold as the Auris in Europe – is said to offer “improvements in the key areas of design, sensory quality and dynamics”.

The revamped hatchback is set to go on sale locally later in 2015, but Toyota’s local arm won’t sell the high-tech new 1.2-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Instead, the brand will continue with the current 1.8-litre normally-aspirated unit.

The company says “Australian customers will be offered improved fuel efficiency while retaining the most powerful Corolla engine available … with maximum output of 103kW”. That engine is the best performer on a kilowatt basis – the new 1.2 has just 85kW – but the smaller engine does produce more torque with a maximum output of 185Nm which is spread from 1500-4000rpm. The 1.8’s peak torque output is 173Nm, hit at at a high 4000rpm.

Likewise, the hybrid version – as is seen in these images – won’t be sold here.

However, there are big changes to the Corolla – and we’re not just talking about the reshaped headlights, the broad, chrome-edged grille, the chunkier bumpers and the revamped tail-lights.

The interior has also seen a makeover, including a redesign of the dashboard, new trims and materials through the cabin, while a new touchscreen media system takes pride of place in the centre of the cockpit.

Toyota claims the car will see “further benefits from suspension and steering revisions designed to improve ride comfort, handling and driver involvement”, including revisions to the front and rear suspension that are said to have improved body roll damping through corners, as well as improving comfort when the car is moving in a straight line.

The Corolla’s electric steering system has also seen enhancements that are said to “further build steering weight as vehicle speed increases”.
