Honda Civic Type R revealed in full

After what feels like years of leaks, teasers and spy shots, the all-new Honda Civic Type R has finally been unveiled in full ahead of its debut at this week's 2015 Geneva motor show.

The turbocharged Honda Civic Type R hot hatch is said to be the most powerful and fastest front-drive model ever to be sold, with its 2.0-litre turbocharged VTEC four-cylinder engine reportedly producing 231kW of power at 6500rpm and 400Nm of torque at 2500rpm.

While naturally-aspirated VTEC engines of years past have been known for their high-revving nature, the new turbo VTEC engine - the first of its kind - in the Type R has its redline set at 7000rpm. The Honda Civic Type R will be offered solely with a six-speed manual gearbox.

Performance highlights for the boosted four-pot hatchback include a top speed of 270km/h, and a 0-100km/h claim of 5.7 seconds.

Helping to get the power to the road - which is critical in a car with this much grunt that only propels itself using the same wheels that steer it - is a new suspension system called "Dual Axis Strut", which has an additional steering knuckle that is said to cut torque steer by 50 per cent compared to a regular Civic. The Type R also has a limited slip differential. The steering is an electric system that has been tuned specifically for the Type R, while the car also features adaptive dampers.

While the Type R gets an adaptation of MacPherson style front suspension, the rear is a heavily modified torsion beam setup which is said to improve rigidity and improve stability at high speeds during cornering.

In further techno-trickery, the Civic Type R debuts the "+R" drive mode, which livens up the engine, offers more torque, stiffens the dampers (by 30 per cent). The brakes are Brembos, with 350-millimetre discs up front, and the wheels are 19-inch lightweight units.

As you can see from the images above and below, the interior has seen the sporty treatment, too, with oversized bucket seats covered in a suede-like fabric.

Red highlights and stitching abounds, while an aluminium-alloy gearknob and black head-liner add some extra flair. The Type R also features a lap timer system, as well as a digitised 0-100km/h "attack" timer.

Honda Australia has confirmed the new Civic Type R will be sold here, and deliveries are expected to commence in 2016, though no official timing has been made public.
