2013 Mazda MX-2 rendered speculation
June 30, 2009 by George Skentzos
The Mazda MX-5 has earned high acclaim as a pure driver’s car thanks to its superb handling and agility with just the right amount of power.
Now the brand is set to improve on this philosophy by adding affordability to the mix with a new entry-level MX-2 Roadster rumored to be in development for 2013.
Although its future hasn’t been set in stone just yet, with Mazda largely hoping the economy will have recovered by then since a roadster isn’t exactly best way to stimulate a difficult economic environment.
Its design will mimic the next-generation models from Mazda which have been based on the Nagare ‘Flow’ series of concept vehicles, incorporating the now trademark wide-mouthed grille.
The engine line-up is purely speculation at this point, although the pecking order would suggest something smaller and more efficient would be slipped under the bonnet compared to the MX-5.

sheeeet! i’m def feeling this car! looks like an instant classic. Mazda will no doubt make this a killer handler for the masses.
Maybe it’s me but does anyone else see Maserati and Ferrari design cues in it?
Looks awesome!
GTR, yes deifinatey! That front instantly reminded me of the California and the GranSport. I like the looks though, not too sure about the stubby rear but.
Bah, rendered speculation…
Although it looks good (mainly because of the Maserati GranTourismo headlamps), it’s still a speculation.
Would be nice to see a few other manufacturers get on board with this segment. Im sure there are plenty of young girls with a little too much ‘mummy and daddy’ dollars that would die for this.
What others have there been? Im thinking Daihatsu Copen? Suzuki cappuccino? any others?
Not sure how this would work. How cheap can they make a decent drop-top sports car? I can’t see it getting in anywhere less than $30k. And if so, won’t that cannibalise MX-5 sales? Or even worse, drive the MX-5 more up-market (bigger, heavier, more expensive)?
Two words… Never, Happen.
I cant see this model ever arriving in Oz.
Looks hot and would love one….
would love one! stuff the 2.3L turbo in it and it’ll be a giant killer!
Mazda REALLY need this car.
The MX5 is now near ~$50k, no longer the bargain it once was when it came out [In AUS anyway]and would only be selling in limited numbers, it deserves better.
Kick this off @ under <$25k [or less] and it will be like the-good-old-days again, with “Q”’s to buy it and punters lining up and having fights to place an order.
Does NOT need any performance, girls just want to look good, who cares if it does’ent do 0 – 350km/h in under 5 seconds, besides i [we] just want to perve and the girls wizzing by….[as u do!]
Would it be a chick magnet? :-)
Cheers

C/A^^^^^^”Nagare ‘Flow’”
LOL, it aint a Bolwell you know!
They MUST build it, the WORLD is needing a cheap soft-top
Back end is a BMW Z clonish
Would NOT want it to be to small like the D.Copen, if so, PASS, they are like matchboxs, not suitable for 85% of humanoid size.
Cheers

i doubt it will ever be that cheap
i don’t think even people remember back to 1989 when the original NA MX5 came in at $29,990
if this one is anything like that i’d be surprised
Mmmmmmmmmmmm………I don’t know. It obviously has a Mazda 3 grill.
Please RX2!
Yeah, a rotary N/A engine would be sweet :D
Just re-invent the Austin-Healey Bugeye Sprite. Mine is everything I need in a sports car.
