Fisker Karma to be rebranded Elux Karma, delayed until 2016 – report

The Chinese company that bought Fisker out of bankruptcy is reportedly planning on rebranding its flagship vehicle as the Elux Karma.

According to a Reuters report, Wanxiang is planning to ditch the Fisker name in favour of a new brand, Elux. This move will see the plug-in hybrid Fisker Karma sedan rebadged as the Elux Karma.

The Chinese company had originally planned to launch a revised version of the Karma during 2015. Two anonymous sources, who spoke with the newswire, have indicated that the relaunch has now been pushed out to the middle of 2016.

Any plans to resume production of the Karma at Valmet's factory in Finland have also reportedly been shelved. An alternative production site has yet to be settled on, but the company does own a plant in the US state of Delaware.

Wanxiang, a Chinese automotive components maker based in the city of Hangzhou, bought the assets of Fisker Automotive for US$149.2 million ($164.8 million) in early 2014; Fisker fell into Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November 2013.

The original Karma had a troubled gestation and suffered a number of fire-related recalls. Before the company went bust, the Karma featured two electric motors driving the rear wheels. The on-board 20.1kWh lithium-ion battery pack could be recharged either via mains power or the on-board 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
