2015 Mercedes-AMG C63 pricing and specifications

Following its international unveiling at last year’s Paris motor show, pricing and specifications have been announced for the much-anticipated 2015 Mercedes-AMG C63.

Mercedes-Benz Australia has made the decision to forgo the standard AMG 63 model, instead, deciding to launch exclusively with the AMG C63 S sedan priced from $154,900 (plus on-road costs) and the Estate version from $157,400.

The only AMG C-Class model currently available is the C63 AMG 507 Coupe, which wears a price tag of $159,507, and according to Benz, is not as well equipped as the new model. The new price also represents an advantage over its chief competitor, the BMW M3 sedan (from $156,430).

The latest-generation AMG C63 S loses its predecessor’s naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 in favour of a downsized twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8, borrowed from the Mercedes-AMG GT sports car.

However, despite its smaller displacement, the new powertrain is considerably more powerful, producing 375kW between 5500-6250 rpm and a staggering 700Nm between 1750-4500 rpm (up 2kW and 90Nm).

Performance has also been improved, with the AMG C63 S sedan claiming a 0-100km/h-sprint time of 4.0 seconds, while the C63 wagon manages 4.1sec – bettering the 507 sedan’s time by 0.1sec.

The new higher-output engine is also more efficient, consuming 8.6 litres per 100 kilometres (combined) for the sedan (down from 12.0L) and 8.7L/100km for the Estate (down from 12.2L). Merc claims the new C63 to be the most frugal eight-cylinder car in the high-performance segment.

There’s an extensive range of standard equipment including the AMG Ride Control sports suspension with adaptive dampers, electronic rear locking differential and AMG Dynamic Select drive programs.

New to both the AMG C63 and the segment are dynamic engine mounts – as used on the Mercedes-AMG GT. The company claims the new mounts provide the best possible balance between ride and handling by adapting their stiffness to suit different driving conditions.

Both the sedan and Estate are available in rear-wheel drive only, with no plans to release a 4Matic (all-wheel drive) version.

While the order bank for the new Mercedes-AMG C63 S has already opened, cars won’t arrive in showrooms until the third quarter of 2015.
