Scuderia Ferrari previews the future of Formula One

Scuderia Ferrari may be coming off a shocker of a Formula One Season, but that hasn’t diminished its designers’ creative spark — quite the contrary.

The Italian Stallion this week revealed its bold look into the potential future of F1 design, sketching out a radical concept racer. We hope Ferrari’s crystal-balling exercise comes to fruition…

“Our challenge was to create something that was – to put it short – better looking. We value your comments on that,” Scuderia Ferrari said in a short statement accompanying the images.

“Would it be possible to come up with an F1 car which not only is technologically advanced, but also captivating to the eye and aggressive-looking?

“And could this be made without having to overturn the current technical rules? At Ferrari, we believe so. Let us introduce you to the ‘concept design’ that was conceived by our design studio (Centro Stile Ferrari) together with the Scuderia’s aero department,” it added.

Ferrari is coming off a tough year on the F1 grid, having finished in fourth place behind Mercedes, Red Bull Racing-Renault and Williams-Mercedes — a result labelled publicly by chairman Sergio Marchionne as unacceptable. In the off-season it appointed four-time World Champion Sebastien Vettel to replace Fernando Alonso, who defected to McLaren-Honda.

Fiat-Chrysler chief Marchionne, 62, took over as Ferrari head last October amid rumours of a rift with outgoing long-time boss Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, who oversaw Ferrari’s F1 domination during the Schumacher years.

“I keep on being reminded there are a number of factors that impact on performance and then I go to Monza and I see the first six cars on the grid not being Ferrari and not being powered by Ferrari engine and my blood pressure, as much as I keep it under control, regardless of blue pills or no blue pills, just popped and if it happens once and then happens twice, eventually you wake up and you say, well maybe there’s a better way to do this,” Marchionne said in a press conference attended by CarAdvice in October last year.

“A non-winning Ferrari on the Formula 1 track is not Ferrari," he added. “...We’ve got to go kick some ass and we’ve got to do it quickly. So take what it takes. We may screw up but we have nothing to lose here, right? We’re not, we’re not in the top three so let’s go risk something."

Ferrari is asking for comments on its design, which you can leave here. Tell us below what you think of this peak into Formula One’s potential future. The word "stunning" comes to our mind.
