2011 BMW M5 – twin-turbo V10 & KERS?

June 26, 2009 by Matt Brogan

Rumours this morning point to BMW’s next M5 – due for release next year – featuring a twin-turbo V10 as well as a version of BMW’s Formula One Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS).

Said to be derived from the twin-turbocharged V8 currently used in the BMW’s X5 M and X6 M, the new V10 will deliver upwards of 450kW and even include cylinder deactivation to increase fuel efficiency.

In addition to the new twin-turbo V10, the use of KERS would recoup some of the energy lost during deceleration, storing that energy for an extra boost of power when needed.

The next M5 – along with the rest of the 5 Series range – is due mid-next year but will be sold as a 2011 model.

The german hipo cars are already ballistic. This will just add to it. The current M5 is already quicker then most supercars.

The M badge still rules over the audi’s RS and Merc’s AMG.

  2. FrugalOne says:

WOW, power and clean/green economy, what more would you want?

Alleged cap on BHP, yeah right, race is now on the be first to 500kW!

Now just need to find somewhere that you can tap into all those gg’s!

    Cheers

    F-0

The current M5 is my favourite car. Ever. This one may just top it. Although I have to say, I do have more of a soft-spot for the naturally aspirated engines, there’s just something pure about them. The V10 twin blower will be a ball ripper though, no doubt.

  4. Alan says:

Yay for V10 Twin Turbo, but KERS? LOL!

  5. Devil666 says:

BMW can’t even get KERS working that well on an F1 budget… sounds a bit suspect. Hopefully they can fix their gearbox issues, those SMG’s were just utter rubbish, especially when compared to E-gear, Ferrari’s F1, AMG’s 7MCT speedshift. Wrong car for that style of gearbox. BMW’s DSG so far hasn’t been as bad but I’ve seen a few issues…8 gears sounds intriguing but perhaps overkill… Where do we draw the line for too many gears?

  6. AAA says:

The obvious.. they should put down the extra power to the 2/4 front wheels rather than squeezing tons of power to the 2/4 rear wheels and try to tame the wheelspin ~

  7. The KERS is interesting. I wonder if it could be an answer to perpetual motion. Now that would be cool, a car that charges itself as you drive.

  8. Captain Mainwaring says:

This is a BMW thread, so it’s not off-topic, but where is the missing rocket from Munich? AKA Bavarian Missile (.)(.)
AKA dead heat in a Zeppelin race. Haven’t heard from her for a long time.
Thought Salesman was missing as well, but he’s just showed up again. Must have been busy taking orders for new Kia Ceratos.

  9. The Realist says:

My car is fantastic, the best I have ever owned – and is a rocket on rails to boot. But the next M5 will be at another level.

Artists’ renderings of the next M5 at forums like bimmerpost are great!

  10. Carz says:

I’ve always been into BMW cars and this makes me more love it and impressed. Anything that would make car powerful or super fast is definitely intriguing,KERS sounds cool.

  11. Simon says:

Why bother trying to put a monster on a diet? If it’s made for performance, sure, make more KW with less fuel, but KER and cylinder deactivation? It makes no sense.
Sorry BMW, this sort of thing will appeal to tossers. Perhaps upholding some preconceived notions of the typical BMW driver?

  12. Minnow says:

What do you mean put it on a diet? Its the sort of technology that is used in F1, i wouldnt call it a diet i’d call it beefing up the barbarian. KERS uses free energy, so i reckon bring it on! But agreed with the cylinder deactivation, thats more a marketing gymick than anything else. Its going to be absolutely insane yet sedate enough to blend in while picking up milk at the shop.

Captain, if you say the name 3 times it might re-appear, like Beetle-juice. So give it a rest aye. Remember too, be careful what you whish for………….

As for the BEEMER, goodness gracious what a piece of marvellous engineering.

So you’d prefer to be a pleb than be perceived a tosser and be able to afford a $250K+ car?

  15. UR far too snobby Alex says:

This car may appeal to throwers, but to own and drive 1 you would have to have big balls.
