Hyundai Genesis Coupe replacement spotted undergoing testing

Hidden under the body shell of the current-generation Hyundai Genesis Coupe in these spy images reportedly sits a new, longer, lighter platform that could bring V8 petrol power and all-wheel-drive propulsion to the South Korean brand's performance coupe.

The Genesis Coupe was spotted during winter testing in Sweden, and according to our spies, the vehicle may be fitted with Hyundai's HTRAC all-wheel-drive system for the first time.

What gives this mule away is that it appears to feature a marginally longer wheelbase, as well as wider tracks front and rear. While those changes will enhance the handling and traction on offer, it is also believed that the new Genesis coupe will offer greater interior space as a result, and the presentation of the cabin is also likely to take a big step up.

Precise details are scarce, but the test mule's reshaped bonnet suggests a big engine could be hiding underneath - possibly the 5.0-litre unit seen in the Genesis sedan, which pumps out 317kW of power and 519Nm of torque.

If the car were to be engineered with a V8 petrol powertrain, it could be marketed as a competitor to the likes of muscle cars such as the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro in its biggest-selling market. In terms of styling, the Hyundai HND-9 concept coupe gives an indication of what to expect.

The importance of the new Genesis Coupe to the Australian arm of Hyundai is huge.

The company made its intentions clear that it would bring the new-generation car way back in 2011, but there's still no word yet on whether a V8 version - should one eventuate in the production car - would be available with right-hand drive. That configuration isn't possible in the Genesis sedan, and that's why that car comes with a 3.8-litre V6.

"If they build it in right-hand drive, we will take it," said Hyundai Australia public relations general manager Bill Thomas. "We're extremely interested in the Genesis Coupe, as we see it as an extension of the Genesis brand."
