Holden Insignia VXR production commences

Production of the Holden Insignia VXR performance sedan has commenced in Russelsheim, Germany, ahead of the arrival of the go-fast four-door in the second quarter of 2015.

The new Holden Insignia VXR - which is an updated version of the Opel Insignia OPC that was on sale in Australia for just a matter of months before that brand folded - will sit at the top of the brand's European performance model line, which will also consist of the Astra VXR, Astra GTC and the less sporty Cascada convertible.

All four of the new models will be on sale in the coming months, with the company's website claiming May 2015 will see the arrival of the Astra and Cascada models, while the Insignia could hit showrooms around June. It's a move the brand claims "signifies Holden’s ongoing commitment to sourcing the best vehicles from around the world".

Holden executive director of marketing - and former Opel Australia chief - Bill Mott said in a release that the strength of GM's global resources will help the lion brand add more models to its line-up.

“Astra, Cascada and Insignia are renowned in Europe for their performance credentials and premium execution, making them the perfect addition to Holden’s range as we continue to offer more choice for our customers,” Mott said.

“These stunning niche vehicles are sure to have a fantastic halo effect and attract new customers to the brand.

“We are determined to offer Australians the best possible products that we can source from GM’s global operations and Opel’s commitment to performance and quality aligns perfectly with our own heritage and brand.”

Opel Group CEO Karl-Thomas Neumann stated that he looks forward to strengthening the link between Europe and Australia in the future.

“This is further proof of our engineers’ development expertise and the attractiveness of our products. We are delighted that our successful flagship will be available in Australia.”

Holden recently appointed a new CEO, Mark Bernhard, and at that time GM executive vice president and president of GM International, Stefan Jacoby, announced a plan for the Holden brand to launch 24 models by 2020. The brand had previously asserted that one in every three models will be sourced from Europe.
