Next Nissan GT-R confirmed as a hybrid 2+2, not due until at least 2018

Key details about the next-generation Nissan GT-R have been confirmed by Shiro Nakamura, Nissan's chief creative officer.

Nakamura spoke to Top Gear recently about the next Godzilla and confirmed "it will be a hybrid". To respect the wishes of Kazutoshi Mizuno, the GT-R's former chief engineer and "godfather", the GT-R will "always be a front-engined 2+2-seater coupe".

Regarding styling, Nakamura says that the next GT-R may take "some elements from the front and rear" of the Nissan 2020 Vision Gran Turismo concept (above).

We'll all be waiting a while before know for certain what the next-generation GT-R will look like and how it goes about challenging the supercar fraternity, as Nakamura doesn't believe we'll see the next new GT-R surface until "2018, at the earliest".

The current GT-R made its debut back in 2007. It was the first GT-R to be separated from the Skyline range and featured a 358kW/583Nm 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6, a six-speed dual-clutch transmission and an advanced rear-biased all-wheel drive system.

Since then Nissan has updated its halo supercar with a number of visual, aerodynamic and handling tweaks. The GT-R has seen its power and torque outputs ramped up. The latest iteration has 404kW of power and 632Nm of torque on tap from its force-fed V6 motor, while the top-shelf Nismo version is capable dishing out 441kW and 652Nm.
