2012 Buick Excelle small sedan spied

June 24, 2009 by George Skentzos

With General Motors set to delve into smaller, more fuel efficient vehicle segments following its restructuring, evidence of this change has emerged with an all-new small sedan prototype spied near the Nurburgring.

Revealed as the new Buick Excelle, it will slot below the mid-size Lacrosse sedan in both size and price mainly for the US and Chinese markets when it launches sometime in 2012.

The Excelle will use GM’s new Delta II platform which also underpins the highly anticipated Holden Cruze and new-generation Opel Astra.

It will likely share its powertrain options with its more mainstream siblings, with front-wheel-drive variants set to gain a 1.8-litre petrol engine that produces 105kW and 176Nm.

The 1.6-litre petrol engine from the Cruze could also find its way into the range, although this is less likely as the Buick version will compete in a more premium segment.

There is also a possibility the new Buick Excelle could be sold in Europe under the Opel brand, in which case it would receive the Cruze’s 2.0-litre diesel engine.

This was potted by Wheels magazine about 8 months ago, and it was the same car. i can tell by the plates and the grille. Why is the mighty CA responding so late. Wheels spotted it testing with short wheelbase commi’s and Test Camaro’s.

  4. R McDonald says:

Much like the French shouldn’t do big cars, the Americans shouldn’t try small cars. If this means they go out of business, then…c’est la vie!

  5. Myke says:

I think its a new Astra with a boot, the doors and windows look the same. If so why is it going to take two/three years?

  6. Frontman says:

Have heard that this is the Buick version of the new opel astra to go on sale in China as a 2012 model, (meaning 2011 release) the dsh (seen elswhere this week) is same as 010 astra and sizing is on par. Being Chinese DOM version the small motor will fit in quite well I believe..
As to those who questioned, this car may have been seen earlier, however these are a new set of photos released to the wubble u wubble u wubble u. so don’t crucify CA for showing them. Simply put, it proves that whilst GM are in trouble in the US their regional partners are still carrying on business as usual….

  7. Carz says:

Good move by GM to produce more fuel efficient cars. Maybe this can help them in terms of sales. But 2-3 years is way too long, it might discourage potential buyers.
