2009 Mugen Honda Civic Type-R

June 22, 2009 by George Skentzos

Update: Honda Civic Review

The potent Civic Type-R has received an aggressive overhaul from Honda’s in-house tuning division Mugen, destined for the UK market.

Inspired by the Japan-only Civic Mugen RR sedan, the new hatch boasts a wild aero kit, uprated engine, a few suspension tweaks and some racing goodies for the interior.

From the outside it is obvious that this is no normal Type-R with plenty of vents and flares, huge exhausts and an oversized wing to put a grin on any boy-racers face.

Exact details on changes to the engine are scarce, although it is likely to feature similar modifications to its Mugen RR sedan sibling – meaning around 179kW at 8,000rpm from the 2.0-litre VTEC powerplant.

Inside it should gain a pair of Recaro pews along with the obligatory Mugen branding.

It should also handle a lot better, with a limited slip differential as standard (as featured on all 2009 Civic Type-R models), wider tyres and sports tuned suspension.

The Mugen Civic Type-R will remain a UK-only model so it is unlikely we will see it in local showrooms any time soon.

Plenty of power , but no mention of torks , means a flurry of gear changes , very tiring .

  2. FrugalOne says:

    *****PRIMO!*****

    One word….RICER!!

Good for the Asian dudes i suppose?

    Cheers

  3. hks says:

still rather the civic type r sedan, sad we’ll never get to see it here

  4. Dick Justice says:

    it looks plain ridiculous..

  5. ChineseDriver says:

    FrugalOne,

Unfortunately this is designed in UK. So get over the Asian dude thing. I also heard the Japanese Type R is one of the quickest FWD, which is much more quicker than the UK type R (as tested by 5th Gear).

Anyway, I think this thing looks HOT!!! The exhaust is so overdone but I like it in this case lol.

  6. Mad Max says:

It would fit in well in Springvale or Paramatta. But IMHO, that is just ugly. All those bits of plastic glued all over it.

  7. Frenchie says:

It is a joke for the price they are asking for it.

  8. fasthonda says:

For once I agree with Chinese driver.
I actually don’t like huge wings at the rear however,on the track, going flatout,it strangely doesn’t seem to look out of place.
Checkout the clip below. The sound coming into the cabin would be very addictive for me.
It would certainly to be a fun car to drive…..FAST!!!hee..hee!

Oh!,Mugen stuff has been always be very, very expensive :(

  9. ChineseDriver says:

    Frenchie,

How much are they asking for this?

I think the Type R in Aus is already a rip off. for $40K you get 4 speakers, no leather, no sunroof… Don’t see who will buy that over a GTI.

  10. Sinalot says:

Just quick check on Honda website shows 6 speakers and not 4 speakers.

My younger sibling has a Type R and I would drive one before commenting. I own a Golf GTI and have tracked both on several occasions and I can say the Type R is an absolute blast to drive. It’s basically a track car that you can live with comfortably. Truth be told, the GTI just feels rather boring and just plain common these days:( Annoys the hell out of me :(

  11. KM says:

Looks like a spaceship out of star wars….

  12. Alan says:

@Chinesedriver: According to another website, they are estimating it will cost around between 40k – 50k Euro. That is around Audi S3 territory.. Ouch!

  13. ElecEng says:

Unless they fixed the suspension to be the same to the Japanese Spec Type-R, it will not be as good.

  14. Luke says:

What a tacky looking Civic. How disappointing.

  15. Jimmy says:

Luckily it has a rear spoiler, it would probably take-off without it with 179kW under the bonnet.

  16. D says:

Mad Max that is so true!

    This thing is hideous!

  17. Frenchie says:

    ChineseDriver:

Autocar.com.uk are quoting prices starting at 35,000 pounds.

  18. HAL says:

^ Jimmy, the Mazda 3 MPS seems to cope just fine without such a ridulous looking spoiler to keep it from taking off. And that has 195kW and 380Nm straight from the factory. This thing is ugly and a waste of time.

  19. vti07 says:

The MPS3 is a 2.3 L turbo so it should make 190 kw and 380 Nm. Don’t forget that the Type R is 2.0 L normally aspirated (not much torque though).

What would be great is an MPS3 with AWD. Don’t AWD versions of the 3 (Axela) exist already?

Next version of the MPS3 should be a great car.

  20. AAA says:

Fugliest car ever. The 4 door Civic looks better though.

  21. MaK says:

LSD will make it a great handling front wheel drive – even though it does have a torsoin beam rear axle…

Still not sold on the looks…

Star wars spaceship definately – as per KM

    Try AGAIN !!!

Some actual pictures of the car.

    http://www.leblogauto.com/v/Ho.....4.jpg.html

The look is very purposeful. It makes the Golf and the Mazda look very ordinary indeed.

  24. Neo Utopia says:

You know this car is so kitschy I almost like it for being so outside the conservative mold, but I don’t think I would buy this over the S2000 or Integra, too rounded to be taken seriously on the street.
