hi, Steve again (comment 1).
now had the S40 D5 3.5 years and 45,000 kms without a problem. I did fit an ECU update to get 152kW and 412 Nm and it pulls really hard. It also gets 1000kms to a tank on a trip.
We are now about to change our circumstances.... retirement, move to the country, explore the Aussie outback as often as we can whilst towing a small camper trailer so we need more ground clearance. The S40 had been our favourite car in 33 joint years of ownership of cars.
Classy, elegant and efficient without the tags applied to BMW drivers etc.
We love this car so much that we are updating to another Volvo, an XC60 with the latest D5 (twin turbos).
I can't recommend S40 D5s highly enough

Is this car mean't to compete with the Renault Laguna? It looks a bit small to be honest. Nice to hear the good comments though.

I have the s40 2.0d (not quite as quick as the d5) and its still got a load of grunt.

Its not as quick as the s40 t4 I had before, but since the power is their all the way through the rev range, I hardly noticed the difference between the two... apart from at the filling station!

I've had a Dolomite Sprint, a Suttons Turbo Commodore (1980). several V8s and an ex police charger so I'm familiar with grunty cars.
I bought the D5 some months ago after being stunned by the real world performance as it applied all that torque to 1400kgs of weight.

Add to that the 850 kms I got before the fuel light came on (nearly 6 L/100km) during a return trip to Junee. This on a car that only had 2,000kms on the dial and well short of "loosened up".

I guess one of the reasons I'm impressed was because I never ever thought I'd buy a Volvo.... to me they were boring tin boxes full of airbags.
The new D5 S40 has changed my perceptions
