2015 Shelby GT Mustang : 522kW-plus for supercharged pony car

Iconic pony car tuner Shelby American understands that the 373kW/542Nm-plus GT350R Mustang unveiled at last week’s Detroit motor show won’t be hardcore enough for some fans, so it’s followed up with this: the 2015 Shelby GT.

Based on the 2015 Ford Mustang GT, the Shelby GT may be down 200cc on the GT350R, but gains a Ford Racing supercharger to help extract 468kW of power from the 5.0-litre V8 – 144kW more than it produces in naturally aspirated production form.

Those after even more horses can opt for Shelby’s performance upgrade, which increases the engine’s output to beyond 522kW (700hp).

Ford Racing is also responsible for the 2015 Shelby GT’s unique exhaust, half shafts, short-throw gear lever, and upgraded shocks, springs and sway bars.

Other mechanical enhancements of the include a Wilwood performance front brake upgrade, Michelin tyres, and 20-inch ‘Shelby Venice’ wheels by Weld Racing measuring 9.5 inches wide at the front and 10.5 inches at the rear.

Lightweight carbonfibre is applied extensively across the 2015 Shelby GT’s exterior, used for the bonnet, front splitter, side skirts, mirror covers, two-piece rear diffuser, boot lid and spoiler.

Visual enhancements include Shelby GT stripes and badges and Shelby lettering on the boot lid, customisable billet aluminium upper and lower front grilles, ‘Powered by Ford’ badges, and a Shelby faux fuel cap.

The cabin is distinguished with Shelby-branded headrests and floor mats, Shelby GT door sill plates, carbonfibre dash pod with three gauges, and a dash plaque and engine plate.

The basic modification will cost owners US$39,995 ($48,700) on top of the price of the Mustang GT base car, which starts US$32,625 ($39,700), giving the 2015 Shelby GT an all-inclusive starting price of US$72,620 ($88,200) – making it roughly the same price as a Porsche Cayman GTS in the US.

Shelby is taking orders for the car now, with delivery of the first vehicles planned for April.

The 2015 Ford Mustang will reach Australian showrooms in December.
