Audi releases A5 Sportback teaser pic
June 18, 2009 by Matt Brogan
Audi has today released another teaser pic of its upcoming A5 Sportback, a car it says combines the best of coupe elegance with avant (wagon) practicality.
The Sportback, as well as being the third member of the A5 model family, has also helped Audi effectively create a new segment.
The A5 Sportback will feature the same range of TFSI, FSI and TDI engines as the regular A5 range while boasting an elegant, elongated, sporty profile.
The large hatchback fits perfectly into the tail-end styling. The spoiler lip and the diffuser insert provide contrast and emphasize the athletic tautness of the elongated contour.
The coupe-like silhouette is the result of a roof section with a long, tapering roofline that is moderately lower by 36mm than the A4 Sedan and of the short overhangs at the front and rear as well as the long wheelbase of 2,810 mm and the four frameless doors with their slim, dynamic window styling.
The unusual hatchback design is distinctively emblematic of the vehicle’s excellent functionality enabling luggage volume of 480 litres.
Release timing is yet to be confirmed.

Didn’t Mercedes-Benz define this segment with the CLS? Long before this came along?
The CLS is a Sedan with a low coupe roofline which was actually defined by the Rover P5 Coupe of the 1950’s. This is a large hatch, which was defined by the Rover SD1 of the 1970’s. These aren’t new ideas just reincarnations of old ones.
Correct MR2, at least Audi is staying within the family for it’s name though, Remember teh Type 3 Fastbacks???
But realistically can you name anything in the last 5 years that is genuinely new to the Automotive industry??
Kia Soul ?
