Mercedes-Benz S-Class Convertible, S-Class Pullman confirmed

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class range expands to four body styles this week with the introduction of the stretched Mercedes-Maybach iteration, but the company isn’t stopping there.

Today at the Mercedes-Maybach launch in the US, the company confirmed speculation that an additional pair of spin-offs were up its sleeve, including a new range-topping convertible version “for the star-gazers”, based on the recently released S-Class Coupe

The spiritual successor of the W112 SE and W113 SL ragtops of the 1960s and 1970s will be aimed squarely at Bentley’s open-aired Continental, and is a fair chance at being the most opulent boulevard cruiser this side of a Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead.

Previous spy images of the vehicle — official confirmation of its existence today from S-Class product management director Martin Hulder thereby came as small surprise — have shown the car will come with a folding soft-top.

There is also likely to be some inspiration taken from the Ocean Drive concept displayed at the 2007 Detroit motor show, albeit without the four-door layout.

The new range-topping Mercedes-Benz convertible will make its world premiere at the Frankfurt motor show in September. When it hits production, there will be five S-Class versions: the short- and long-wheelbase sedans, Coupe, Convertible and Mercedes-Maybach limo.

But we said six variants would eventually feature…

The other? It’s to be an even more stretched version than the already stretched Mercedes-Maybach S-Class — to clarify, Maybach is no longer a standalone brand, but rather a sub-brand a la AMG — called the Pullman

Previous-generation S-Class Pullman

This version will have the familiar three rows of seats, with the rear pair opposite-facing like a train. The car will be pitched at world leaders, diplomats and other movers and shakers, while Guard armoured versions will also be offered.

The expansion of the S-Class family shows that Mercedes-Benz is expanding at the peripheries in both directions, given it has dramatically grown it budget MFA family of entry-level front-drive models (A-Class, B-Class, CLA and GLA) in recent years too.

As we reported earlier, the new Mercedes-Maybach sub-brand will almost certainly be affixed to a stretched version of the next-generation GLS (nee GL-Class) large SUV, giving the company a viable Bentley Bentayga and Range Rover LWB rival.
