Holden Ute:: pumped Aussie test mule for next-gen mid-engine Corvette spied

A mid-engined Holden SS V ute to mark the end of production? We wish.

What you see here is, according to US publication Car and Driver, an early prototype of a mid-engined Corvette C8 rumoured to be in the pipeline for the US brand's 2017 model year.

The (speculated) early Corvette C8 prototype uses the 5040mm long, 1899mm wide body of the Holden Commodore SS V Ute, which appears to be in VE Series II guise.

The key differences are the massively flared wheel arches, an equally huge rear spoiler for downforce and a mid-section with doors that wrap into the body, most likely from the current Corvette Stingray.

Why a left hand drive VE Commodore as the body for this prototype? Our thoughts are that during the days of Pontiac's failed G8 ST foray, there would have been a number of mules that were used for evaluation or compliance purposes that never made it into production.

We contacted Holden for comment and will update the story with any further details.

There is also a long history between Holden's Australian-based engineers and GM's international product suite, with one notable example being the current locally-developed Chevrolet Camaro.

Either way, it's great to see an Australian product weaving its way into a hearty American supercar.
