Hennessey slips ZR1 LS9 into Camaro

By George Skentzos |

The Camaro Z28 has been unofficially brought to life with renowned powerhouse Hennessey shoehorning the Corvette ZR1′s supercharged LS9 engine into the new 2009 Chevrolet Camaro.

This abomination of power has been dubbed the Limited Edition 2010 HPE700 Camaro, with 700 naturally representing horsepower – up from the standard 638hp (476kW) in the ZR1.

Together with peak torque of 971Nm at 4,400rpm, Hennessey expects zero to 60mph to come up in just 3.7 seconds with a top speed of 323km/h and quarter-mile time of just 11.3 seconds at 125mph.

Along with the engine, the HPE700 Camaro also borrows the ZR1′s optional 15-inch carbon brakes, light weight HRE wheels with Michelin PS2 tires and full suspension upgrades.

“To qualify as a supercar under the HPE banner it can’t just go, it has to whoa.”

The exterior has been similarly upgraded using a combination of GM Performance accessories and unique body panels penned by British designer, Steve Everitt, dubbed the Hennessey Cam-Aero package.

This package includes a carbon fibre rear lip spoiler, carbon fibre side rocker panels, carbon fibre front splitter, front fascia with hideaway-look headlights and front billet grille.

In keeping with the ZR1 theme, Hennessey also plans to fabricate a window into the bonnet of the HPE700 Camaro to show off the tweaked LS9 powerplant.

“The HPE700 Camaro allows our customers to combine supercar power and performance with classic American muscle car looks in a modern, daily-driver usable sportscar with a backseat and a trunk!,” says John Hennessey, President and CEO of Hennessey Performance Engineering. “We will be announcing other Hennessey turnkey vehicle packages for the 2010 Camaro in the near future along with an extensive list of aftermarket performance parts and accessories.”

Disturbingly, customers can also opt for one of two Twin Turbo Upgrades which will see power jump to 600kW and 745kW respectively.

Just 24 of the Limited Edition 2010 HPE700 Camaros are planned to be produced, with 11 already accounted for.

    *****PRIMO!*****

No recession when it comes to cars! :-)

Nice job, a whole bunch of American companies do really great work and power ups to the std. production engines.

Somebody should get one fitted to a bog-stock looking VE Commodore!

    “Saturday Night Special” lol

    Cheers

    I WANT

  • Blue Blood

looks a lot better then the few i have seen getting tested around Melbourne(Dandenongs),needs the large wheels to fill in the wheel arches, the cars getting around here look like they are riding on 16s and they also look like their set at SUV ride height LOL.

Would be good to see a Super Snake and this Camaro Z28 together.

    Go Ford…

  • Will

Looks like an early 90′s batmobile. Like the indigo sub plot. Should have shoved a R15 TDI under the bonnet but GM just isn’t there yet…

  • Mick

This can only lead to good things :D

What a bunch of romantics you are!
    This is indeed an abomination.
Just because it reminds you of the muscle car movies of days gone by does not make this a good offering!

It’s expensive to buy, expensive to run and its inability to get all that power down (and around corners) ain’t going to keep its owners alive for long.

    Pffft. You can keep this.
    One GT-R please.

  • FrugalOne

    ^^^^^^^

    NacaYoda

GT R while a fantastic car needs near $10k in maintance fees per year…Thats silly “special oils”

FYI a ZRI bog stock Corvette has beaten the time of the new generation GT R, hard to believe it, dont think it can corned faster, must have quicker pick up or something?

No matter, the lap time of the Corvette was quicker than the GTR

    I LOVE HiPo V8′s!

    Cheers

Thanks for that insightful post there nacayoda. You’ve just changed everyones mind to your far superior taste in automobiles.
This thing is a beast. Check out their other mod kits on their website. Not a bad company at all.

  • Shak

Naca Yoda did you realise that the ZR1 can produce 1.0g of cornering speed, whereas the GTR, although a great supercar, produces 0.95g of speed.this translates to better cornering in the hands of a real driver.

  • NacaYoda

    Each to their own fellas.

FrugalOne… I don’t think this is the same as the Corvette that posted the Nurburgring time.. is it? This looks like the same engine… but with none of the same running gear (required for things like, cornering performance).

Anyone reckons this will be cheap to run is dreaming. Performance cars take caring for. This is no exception.

…but by all means, debate me, please!

  • Reckless1

I’ll debate you – the GT-R’s Nurburgring time has never been independently verified, nor has anyone else ever been able to match it in a customer car.

Where was the GT-R in the ‘Ring 24 hour race? Not there, because it would have had to show in public what it claims to be able to do in private.

  • Fisherman

The design of these American cars is awe inspiring.
I can understand why the American public said that the Monaro reminded them of a sucked caramel.
These cars scream MUSCLE at you dont they.

  • aubz

    745 kw… why.. just why?!

    Why bloody not!

  • NacaYoda

Reckless1: In order to “debate” you have to stick to the argument. We’re not talking about the performance of the GT-R at the Nurburgring.

What is up for debate is – does putting a record holding Nurburgring engine into a completely different car, actually give it bragging rights for lap times versus the against competitors. And the answer I propose is “hell no”.

IMHO this is a great looking Camero with a massively overspecced power supply that will be great at 1/4 mile sprints and not much else (besides looking good and drinking fuel).

    Please paste retort below ;)

  • Yanzo

omg i’m orgamsing just looking at the picture

  • Glen

Looks a lot better than a GT-R. Put some 20′s or 19′s on it and it will handle much better. But this thing will corner well enough for most people who buy it. But the beauty of Hennessy is you can set the car up anyway you like.

Nacayoda don’t bag out the handling characteristics of this car, this is the same company that built the Viper that holds the ‘ring production car record atm. Faster than any GT-R.

  • Grammar Nazi

The good news is that Oz Lotto’s jackpotted to $50 mill next week. The second thing I’ll do after winning (the first would be flipping the bird as I walk out of my office), would be to call the good folks at Hennessey and get one on the next boat over for a RHD conversion.

  • Danman2

I gotta say.. I kinda like it.. Still prefer a GT500KR but this thing is very ‘SEMA’ and i like it.

It wont get that power to the ground but.Hope they include driving track days with a proffesional so you can learn to drive it saftely..

  • Sam-R

Who really cares about “power to the ground?” One can only do 60kmph on the streets. These things are for show. How many people would buy this and compete on a race track? People buy Lambo’s and Ferarri’s which do corner well and get the power down but how often do they use that ability? That’s my opinion anyway.

  • Allergic To Nuts And Missiles {} {}

Who cares about driving it,just park it up, warm the exhaust up a little bit, get the lube out…………………
( Make sure it’s parked well hidden, especially if your’e married, you know how jealous women get )
