MG GTS SUV unveiled in China

MG has unveiled its first ever SUV, the sportingly titled MG GTS.

Under the bonnet is the company's 2.0-litre turbocharged direct injection four-cylinder engine, which develops 164kW of power and 350Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via an on-demand all-wheel drive system and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

With this drivetrain, the company claims that the GTS can complete the 0-100km/h standard in eight seconds.

Style-wise, the GTS SUV resembles a toned down version of 2013's MG CS concept car.

The new MG GTS sits atop a new scalable architecture developed by parent company SAIC (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation), which also owns the Maxus and Roewe brands, as well as operating joint ventures with GM and the Volkswagen Group.

The MG GTS will be launched in the first half of 2015. Autocar and Auto Express report that the GTS has been pencilled in for an early 2016 release in the UK; it's not known when or if the GTS will become available in Australia.

Reports indicate that down the track, the GTS will be offered as a front-wheel drive vehicle. Other engine options are said to include a 110kW/350Nm 1.8-litre turbo-diesel and a 125kW/250Nm 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol

According to British publications, the GTS sits on a 2650mm wheelbase, and measures 4.5 metres in length, 1855mm wide and is 1675mm tall.

This makes it larger than the Volkswagen Tiguan, but smaller than the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and Mazda CX-5.
