2015 BMW New Cars

Details of the new and updated BMW models launching in Australia in 2015.

BMW 2 Series Convertible – Q1

BMW Australia will complete its 2 Series family early in 2015 with the launch of the Convertible range.

The successor to the old 1 Series Convertible boasts a 20 per cent increase in torsional rigidity and promises to offer a considerably sportier drive.

Available engines should mirror those of the 2 Series Coupe, meaning we can expect 220i, 220d and 228i 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo variants and a high-performance M235i 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo with 240kW and 450Nm.

Expect prices to range between approximately $55,000 to $85,000 plus on-road costs.

BMW 6 Series/M6 – Q2

The upgraded BMW 6 Series luxury sports car family and the high-performance BMW M6 halo models will arrive in the second quarter of 2015 with fresh styling, extra technology and features, and updated interiors.

The 6 Series Coupe, Convertible and Gran Coupe models get a newly designed kidney grille, LED headlights, restyled bumpers, larger tailpipe finishers for six-cylinder models, and six new metallic colours.

The cabins gain new high-quality materials, including two-tone leather upholstery, a new head-up display, and an embedded SIM card for BMW’s ConnectedDrive Services system, which introduces internet-based functions including access to millions of music tracks, Facebook and Twitter integration, and the Concierge Service that links drivers to a personal assistant for all information requests.

BMW X5M and X6M – May

The hardcore second-generation BMW X5 M and X6 M high-performance SUVs will storm into Australian showrooms in May 2015.

Once again a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine sits beneath the bonnet of both, though the latest version has 423kW on tap, up four per cent, while peak torque is up by 70Nm to a whopping 750Nm.

This output boost means that despite weighing a massive 2265kg (X6) or 2275kg (X5), both can hammer from 0-100km/h in just 4.2 seconds, a full half-second faster than the previous generations.

Expect pricing to carry over at around $180,000 to $190,000 before on-road costs.

BMW 1 Series update – Mid 2015

The BMW 1 Series hatchback will get a much-needed mid-life update around the middle of next year as it aims to claw back ground against the hugely popular Audi A3 and Mercedes-Benz A-Class.

The updated 1 Series will take design inspiration from the sportier 2 Series coupe and convertible models at the front, with new headlights that are smaller and less droopy than the current model’s, a revised kidney grille, and remodelled bumpers.

The cabin will get the latest version of BMW’s iDrive infotainment system along with other subtle updates, while minor fuel economy gains are also expected across the line-up.

BMW X1 – Q3

The second-generation X1 will become the first BMW model to switch from rear-wheel drive to front-wheel drive when it launches in 2015.

Based on the UKL1 platform that also underpins the Mini Cooper and 2 Series Active Tourer, the new X1 should offer a more spacious interior and greater fuel efficiency than its predecessor.

Spy shots captured late in 2014 suggest the new X1 will be a better-proportioned SUV, with noticeably shorter front and rear overhangs.

The cabin will also get a bulkier centre stack and an infotainment display that rises out of the dahs rather than being integrated.

X4 M40i – Q4

While BMW remains coy on its plans for a fully fledged X4 M, that doesn’t mean it’s ruling out high-performance variants of its compact coupe-inspired crossover altogether.

CarAdvice’s spy photographers snapped a prototype of what’s believed to be the X4 M40i undergoing high-speed testing at the Nurburgring in October.

The near-production-ready test car wore an M-enhanced body kit, large brakes, and, most significantly, tailpipes on either side of its rear diffuser, making it distinct from all other X4s.

It’s expected to be powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six with up to 280kW, giving the M40i a healthy kick over the 225kW X4 35i.

BMW 3 Series update – Second half 2015

The 3 Series will get an early update during the back half of 2015 as BMW tunes up its mid-size family for battle with the new Jaguar XE and the hugely successful Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

Subtle exterior styling tweaks will be joined by new multimedia functions and higher quality materials on the inside.

The entry-level 316i is also expected to trade its four-cylinder engine for a three-cylinder turbo in the pursuit of reducing weight, fuel consumption and emissions of the model line’s most frugal petrol variant.

BMW X5 eDrive – Second half 2015

BMW is set to expand its plug-in hybrid family in the second half of 2015 with the X5 eDrive.

The X5 eDrive concept – revealed at 2013’s Frankfurt motor show – teamed a 70kW electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack with a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, and sent its power to all four wheels.

The concept claimed combined cycle fuel consumption of 3.8 litres per 100 kilometres, CO2 emissions of less than 90 grams per kilometre, and a pure electric driving range of 30km at speeds up to 120km/h.

Additional details will be revealed in the first half of the new year.

BMW M2 – Q4/2016

BMW still refuses to official confirm the existence of the M2 coupe, numerous set of spy images captured throughout 2014 clearly showed the Bavarian car maker hard at work creating a flagship 2 Series sports car.

Broader wheel arches, blue brake calipers, cross-drilled rotors, gloss black alloy wheels borrowed from the M3/M4 twins and low-profile Michelin tyres are not-so-subtle hints at the test car’s performance credentials.

The BMW M2 is expected to be powered by an uprated version of the M235i’s 240kW/450Nm 3.0-litre inline-six turbo petrol engine. The uprated motor’s output is likely to split the difference between the M235i and the 317kW/550Nm M3/M4.

The M2 is also tipped to inherit much of the chassis technology from the M3/M4, including an electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential, and feature upgraded suspension and M-tuned stability and traction control systems.

BMW 7 Series – Q4/2016

BMW will fire back at the Mercedes-Benz S-Class with a new-from-the-ground-up generation of its 7 Series.

The luxury limousine will be based on a new lightweight platform and its body will shift from steel to a combination of aluminium and carbonfibre in a bid to shed up to 200kg over its predecessor.

Air suspension with road-scanning technology will feature, along with a family of new four-, six-, eight- and 12-cylinder engines and a standard nine-speed automatic transmission. A plug-in hybrid model will also be offered.

Inside, voice recognition technology is said to take priority as BMW aims to reduce the number of buttons and controls in what will be a more luxurious cabin.
