McLaren Sports Series shown undergoing testing

The Woking-based supercar maker has released its first official picture of the upcoming entry-level McLaren Sports Series.

Overnight, across all major forms of social media, including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, McLaren released its first official image of the Sports Series, a camouflaged coupe sliding through a race track corner.

The Sports Series, developed under the codename P13, will feature a carbonfibre chassis and a mid-mounted V8 engine. The new car will slot in underneath the 650S and the detuned, Asia-only 625C.

When the Sports Series goes on sale, it will, effectively, be McLaren's competitor to the Porsche 911 and Mercedes-AMG GT. It's expected that the Sports Series will debut some time during the second quarter of 2015.

The McLaren range currently consists of the 650S, which features a twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8 kicking out 478kW of power and 678Nm of torque to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and the Asia-only 460kW/610Nm 625C.

There's also the range-topping P1, which is limited to a production run of 375 units, the last of which is due out the door around the middle of 2015. The P1 features a 673kW hybrid drivetrain with a more powerful 587kW/719Nm version of the company's twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8.
