2015 Hyundai i30 facelift gains dual-clutch transmission, 137kW Turbo variant

The facelifted Hyundai i30 hatch now sports a front-end design in tune with the rest of the Hyundai range, as well as a new dual-clutch transmission and direct-injection Turbo model.

Visually the updated i30 range is clearly marked out by its new hexagonal grille. More subtle changes include tweaked head- and tail-light graphics, as well as new designs for the 16- and 17-inch alloy wheels.

In Europe, the updated i30 range will be available in three body styles: three-door hatch, five-door hatch and wagon.

Hyundai Australia will continue to offer only the five-door hatch and wagon when it introduces the updated i30 in the first quarter of next year. The company's public relations general manager Bill Thomas said the local division was looking at the i30 Turbo for our market and had not ruled it out, but admitted the Euro-focused variant was "unlikely" to hit local showrooms at this stage.

The European engine range consists of two diesel motors and three petrol engines.

Diesel buyers can choose between 81kW or 100kW versions of the company's 1.6-litre U engine. In both trims, the turbo-diesel engine generates 280Nm of torque when paired with a six-speed manual and 300Nm of torque when equipped with Hyundai's new optional seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Those who want a petrol engine can either go with a 74kW/134Nm 1.4-litre, a 88kW/156Nm 1.6-litre or a 137kW/265Nm 1.6-litre direct-injection turbo engine. All three petrol motors come with a six-speed manual as standard; only the mid-spec 1.6 is available with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Some models will be equipped with automatic engine stop-start, low rolling-resistance tyres and active flaps in the grille which help to reduce drag.

According to Hyundai, the i30 Turbo can complete the 0-100km/h sprint in eight seconds flat and hit a top speed of 219km/h. Sports suspension, 18-inch alloy wheels and a more direct 2.78-turns lock-to-lock steering setup are present to, hopefully, ensure a more satisfying drive.

Euro-spec i30 Turbo three- and five-door hatches are distinguished by a different grille with thicker silver framing, more aggressive front and rear bumpers with red highlights, dual exhaust tips, and a unique LED light bar at the front.

The Turbo's interior (above) features front sports seats, revised instrumentation pack, metal and rubber pedals, and plenty of red detailing on the steering wheel, gear lever and door trim.
